A roguelike action game in the style of dungeon-crawlers, in which we can play solo or in co-op mode. Setting Sun is set in Edo period Japan, where the shogun rules the country with a firm hand and yokai demons move freely around the world.
Setting Sun is a roguelike set in Japan of the Edo era, concentrated on fighting with a hordes of enemies on automatically generated maps. Game was developed by Yean studio.
The action takes place in the alternative version of history, where yokai demons roam freely in Edo period Japan. The country was plunged into fear and chaos by the shogun ruling with a iron hand. A few travelers, including the protagonist, make an attempt to restore order in Japan. They will try to achieve this by fighting their way through hordes of monsters on their way to the daimyo's castle, which is the source of the islands' warfare.
The world of Setting Sun consists of automatically generated maps, thanks to which each player will encounter a slightly different experience. The locations are divided into several types, among which we find enemy rooms, healing rooms and gambling rooms. Battles with enemies are arcade and dynamic, and we observe everything from a camera placed above the character. Opponents are divided into ordinary and bosses, which we meet at the end of each location. For defeating them we receive special points, which we can spend in Dragon Shrines to improve our character's stats.
During the game we can develop our own village. At the beginning it is almost abandoned, but during the next adventures we can fill it with NPCs, who can provide us with various bonuses. For example, bringing a blacksmith to the village, we get the ability to buy new weapons and armor elements. Depending on how we develop and equip our hero, his character class will change, each of which has its own bonuses and unique features.
In Setting Sun we can play solo or with another person through the local co-op mode within the shared screen.
The game's small budget reflected on its graphics, although it is worth noting the variety of enemies and character equipment.
