Shadows Over Loathing is an indie horror comedy RPG. The game features simple, cartoonish visuals, an open world and turn-based combat. It was developed by Asymmetric, the same studio responsible for West of Loathing.
The game is set in Prohibition era United States. The game's protagonist visits his uncle Murray to help him run an antique store in Ocean City. Once there, however, it turns out the old man has set out on a search for cursed relics and nothing's been heard of him since. Our task is to find him and stop the dark forces from annihilating the world.
The game is an RPG set in the open Ocean City. Our primary goal is to search for clues regarding Uncle Murray's disappearance, but we'll also encounter numerous locals with side quests to offer. These range from rather grounded fetch quests, to more unusual tasks such as witch challenges or helping our future alter ego.
An important part of Shadows Over Loathing is turn-based combat, during which we face various enemies, such as gangsters or eldritch monsters. We can fight them off with guns, melee weapons, magical spells and skills. We can also use potions to temporarily buff our party with.
The visuals of Shadows Over Loathing imitate simple drawings - just like in West of Loathing, the characters are stick figures. The game's color palette is entirely black and white.
