Friedemann is an independent developer from Germany, who has co-created projects such as Superflight, Islanders, and Pizza Possum. His first solo work was Summerhouse in 2024. His next solo project is the Slots & Daggers game described here. It is a hybrid of a battle RPG, a roguelike, and a slot machine that is a variation on the popular "one-armed bandits."

Gameplay

In Slots & Daggers the gameplay takes place entirely on a slot machine. The main element is fighting various opponents inhabiting a strange fantasy world. Their illustrations are displayed on a small, monochrome screen, and the battles with them are turn-based.

During the game, we need to be observant and quick. A bit of luck will also come in handy. Our combat actions are determined by the results of the spinning reels, which feature symbols representing attacks, using spells, taking defensive positions, or drinking potions.

The game allows us to manually stop the spinning reel. However, to achieve the desired effect (getting the same symbols on more than one reel results in a bonus), we need to spend some time training.

Developing combat potential

The game is worth the candle, as victories grant us gold coins, which we can then use to purchase new equipment. We also unlock special modifiers (such as additional reels) that expand our range of possibilities and increase our chances of winning.

This is particularly important as we progress and face increasingly stronger adversaries – from goblins to gunslingers. Additionally, for battle-hardened players, there is an extra mode called Egg Arena, where they can put their skills to the ultimate test.

Graphics and sound

The graphics of Slots & Daggers are done in pixel art style, and its audio layer consists mainly of sound effects reminiscent of arcade machines.
