Push Square: 8 / 10 by Stephen Tailby

Some small gripes aside, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is a rock solid kart racer that carves its own path. The dimension-hopping races are fun, varied, and fast, and the robust customisation allows players to really tinker with how the game feels. With energetic action, a good range of race types, and plenty of post-launch content on the way, this is an entertaining entry for casual players and hardcore Sonic fans alike.

Thumb Wars: 4 / 5 by Luke Addison

With the new Crossworlds mechanic really spicing things up gameplay-wise, alongside the Gadget Plate, this might be the best Sonic racing game ever, and it’s definitely the best of 2025, including the moustachioed plumber’s latest offering.

  • CrossWorld Mechanic: The unique feature allowing players to switch tracks mid-race keeps the gameplay fresh and exciting, preventing repetition in races.

  • Graphics and Soundtrack: Players appreciate the beautiful graphics and the energetic soundtrack, which includes remixes from previous Sonic games and a jukebox feature for music selection.
  • Multiplayer Options: The game supports online multiplayer with cross-platform play, allowing players to race against friends on different consoles.
  • Content Variety: There are numerous tracks, gadgets, and game modes, providing substantial content for players to explore and enjoy.

The main cons of the game

  • Price Point: Many users find the game's price (around $70) to be too high for the content offered, suggesting it should be lower to match the value.
  • DLC Character Voice Lines: Some DLC characters lack voice lines, which diminishes their integration into the game and overall experience.
  • Single Player Content: There is criticism regarding the lack of a substantial single-player campaign compared to previous Sonic racing games, with some players feeling that the game is primarily designed for online play.
  • Online Connectivity Issues: Users have reported problems with online stability, including frequent disconnections and difficulties in joining friend lobbies.
  • Gameplay Balance: There are concerns about item balance and the effectiveness of certain vehicles and gadgets, which can lead to chaotic races where luck plays a significant role.

  • Story Mode: Players miss the narrative-driven single-player campaigns that were present in earlier Sonic racing titles.
  • Expanded Voice Lines for Characters: Many players express disappointment that characters, especially DLC ones, do not have enough voice lines or interactions during races.
  • Improved Item Management: Some users suggest a need for better item balance and management to enhance the competitive aspect of racing.
  • Customization Depth: While customization is praised, some players wish for more options, such as additional skins or the ability to assign specific songs to tracks in the jukebox.
  • Enhanced Tutorials: New players have noted that the tutorial system could be improved for better onboarding into the game's mechanics.

Summary

  • In summary, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is celebrated for its engaging gameplay, unique mechanics, and extensive content, but it faces criticism regarding its pricing, lack of a robust single-player experience, and certain gameplay balance issues.
