game release date for PS1:
Prepared by Insomniac Games studio, the third installment of the series allows you to once again embody the brave purple dragon Spyro and save the world. The game retains the characteristic elements of the previous parts, such as colorful graphics and open worlds with numerous challenges, but also adds novelties, including several playable heroes with different skills.
Spyro and his brethren celebrate the Year of the Dragon, an event that takes place once every twenty years. The celebration is disturbed by the emergence of the masked hare Bianca, who, together with an army of rhinoceros-like creatures, steals dragon eggs and takes them to her leader, the Evil Witch. Spyro and his friend, the Sparx dragonfly, are sent to recover them. Soon they find themselves in an unknown world in which dragons used to live and which is now under the rule of a cruel ruler. The purple heros joins a group of rebels who want to liberate the land. Over time, she learns about the true motives of the Witch and its evil plans for all dragons.
Spyro: Year of Dragon on PS1 retains the distinctive elements of the series - it is still a 3D platform where players explore open worlds, perform missions for NPCs, take part in numerous mini-games, collect finds and face dexterity and logic challenges. New in the third part of the cycle are new playable characters. In addition to the dragon in the title, the boards can be traversed as previously freed Shiel kangaroo, penguin Byrd, yeti Bentley or monkey Agent 9. Each of them has its own skills, useful in specific situations, as well as levels designed for itself.
Player-controlled heroes have several health points, symbolized by the color of the Sparks dragonfly. As in the previous sections, they can also deal with enemies through a variety of attacks. During their adventure, the heroes visit 37 maps, collecting stolen dragon eggs, jewels and other goods. Access to some of them is only unblocked over time, with the acquisition of specific abilities or the rescue of given allies, which has an additional impact on the length of the game.
Insomniac Games production retains the character of the entire series, offering cartoon style, ubiquitous humour and colourful setting. A former member of The Police, Stewart Copeland, is again responsible for the soundtrack.
