Stasis is an isometric adventure dark science fiction game developed by a small team from South Africa.

In Stasis, we assume the role of John Maracheck who wakes up in his room in a research facility. The problem is that his family is gone and there is nobody to be found around. The only sign of “life” are flickering monitors and working computers. The protagonist has to find out what happened in this place and find his loved ones. It is no easy task, though, because the laboratory hides many mysteries and dangers.

At the first glance, Stasis seems to be a typical adventure game – the player traverses subsequent locations, searches for items and solves puzzles. The developers introduced a few curious elements, however. The first one is isometric view, which is rather unseen in the genre. The second one: the protagonist can die.

Adventure

A completely free, standalone expansion for Stasis – a dark science-fiction adventure game released in 2015. The plot of Cayne references the base game in a number of ways, but without spoiling it, so players new to the series can also experience the title in full. Story introduces a pregnant woman named Hadle, who wakes up in an obscure medical facility, where unknown men want to take her baby away. As can easily be imagined, the player’s objective is to make sure that this doesn’t happen. The gameplay is exactly the same as in Stasis, so we are looking at a classic adventure game, seen from an isometric view. During the campaign, designed to last for roughly 1.5 hour, we are mainly occupied with exploration of new locations and searching for items, which are necessary to solve the problems turning up along the way. From the audio-visual side, the game relies on the same, albeit beefed up, visuals. Nonetheless, Cayne has a completely new soundtrack, composed by Ivo Sadiski.

The main pros of the game

  • Atmosphere and Sound Design: The game excels in creating a thick, oppressive atmosphere reminiscent of classic sci-fi horror films like Alien and Event Horizon. The sound design is immersive, with unsettling ambient noise and a haunting soundtrack.
  • Storytelling and Writing: The narrative is gripping, with many players appreciating the depth provided by reading crew logs and PDAs, which enrich the backstory and character development. The psychological horror elements are particularly praised.
  • Visuals and Art Style: The isometric visuals are described as finely detailed and immersive, contributing to the game's overall eerie aesthetic. Many players find the retro style charming and fitting for the genre.
  • Puzzles: While opinions vary, many players found the puzzles engaging and well-integrated into the environment, providing a satisfying challenge.

The main cons of the game

  • Puzzles and Gameplay Mechanics: Several reviews mention that some puzzles are unintuitive or rely on "moon logic," leading to frustration. The lack of a hint system and the necessity for pixel hunting are common criticisms.
  • Voice Acting Quality: While the protagonist's voice acting is generally well-received, many players criticize the quality of other characters' performances, particularly Te'ah, which detracts from immersion.
  • Linear Structure and Backtracking: Some players found the game's structure to be too linear, resulting in repetitive backtracking across areas, which can become monotonous without fast travel options.
  • Graphics and Technical Issues: A few reviews mention that the visuals feel dated, and some players experienced issues with resolution and clarity, making it difficult to interact with objects in darker areas.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Hint System: Many players expressed a desire for a hint system to assist with the more challenging puzzles, which could help alleviate frustration.
  • Hotspot Highlighting: The absence of a feature to highlight interactable objects in the environment is noted as a significant oversight, making it challenging to navigate and find items.
  • More Character Development: Some users felt that certain characters, especially the antagonist, lacked depth and development, leading to a less impactful story.
  • Alternative Gameplay Mechanics: A few reviews suggested that the game could benefit from incorporating elements from other genres, such as a walking simulator approach to enhance exploration and narrative immersion.

Summary

  • Overall, while STASIS has received praise for its atmosphere, storytelling, and visuals, it also faces criticism for its puzzle design and some technical shortcomings. Many players recommend it for fans of sci-fi horror, especially if they are willing to navigate its challenges.
