Syberia Remastered is a refreshed version of the cult point & click adventure game, originally released for personal computers in 2002 (over time it also appeared on a number of other platforms). The remaster is the result of a collaboration between the creators of the original, namely Microids studio, and the French team Virtuallyz Gaming.

Improved graphics and other new features

While working on Syberia Remastered, the developers primarily focused on the graphic design, thoroughly refreshing it. The environments have been improved and rebuilt. Efforts were made to maintain artistic consistency with the original and the remaster was overseen by the famous Benoit Sokal. In addition, the character models have been refreshed.

This is not the end, as the creators have also redesigned some of the original puzzles to increase the fluidity of the gameplay and make the solutions more intuitive. Both the interface and the control scheme have been modernized.

Syberia Remastered review: A hit of nostalgia that may not land with everyone

If you enjoyed Syberia in 2002, this is the best way to experience it again. If you’ve never heard of Syberia before this, it might not hit the same way. There is a compelling story, world, and cast of characters at the heart of Syberia - Remastered, however, it’s hard to recommend to everyone. Not all modern players will have the patience to get through Kate Walker’s clunky movement, the puzzles that will have you repetitively running back and forth, and the easy-to-miss objects and interactions that will frustrate you and slow you down. This is certainly the ultimate way to play Syberia now, but I’m not sure everyone will want to.

A beautiful story that didn't get a perfect refresh. The creators could have tried harder.

Syberia Remastered masterfully blends a classic foundation with modern technology, faithfully honoring Benoît Sokal's original creation. While it has its minor imperfections, the game stands as a remarkable achievement by the development team. This beloved classic now breathes anew, introducing its unique world to a new generation. The original could have lived a long life on its own, but this Remaster brings it one step closer to eternity.

The main pros of the game

  • Visual Improvements: The remastered version features significantly enhanced graphics, with improved environments that look sharp and detailed, providing a more immersive experience.
  • Nostalgia Factor: For fans of the original, the game retains the beloved story, characters, and voice acting, maintaining the essence of the original Syberia.
  • Gameplay Mechanics: Some players appreciate the updated movement mechanics and the introduction of new puzzles, which add a fresh element to the gameplay.
  • Atmospheric Soundtrack: The original music score is preserved, enhancing the nostalgic experience and contributing to the game's atmosphere.

The main cons of the game

  • Cutscenes Not Remastered: Many users are disappointed that the cutscenes were not updated and remain as low-resolution, unaltered originals from 2002, creating a jarring contrast with the new graphics.
  • Simplified Gameplay: The game has been criticized for making puzzles easier and for providing excessive guidance, which diminishes the exploration and challenge that characterized the original.
  • Technical Issues: Several players reported bugs, including crashes, glitches, and problems with character animations. Issues with the user interface and interaction points also detracted from the overall experience.
  • Lack of Manual Save Options: The removal of manual save functionality has frustrated players, as it limits flexibility and can lead to lost progress due to crashes or bugs.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • More Engaging Puzzles: Many players expressed a desire for more complex and challenging puzzles, as some original mechanics were simplified or replaced with generic alternatives.
  • Enhanced Character Animations: There is a call for improved facial animations and character interactions, as the current animations feel outdated and lack expressiveness.
  • Quality of Life Features: Users noted the absence of features that would enhance the gameplay experience, such as an option to disable visible interactive hotspots, which detracts from the exploratory nature of the game.
  • Expanded Story Content: Some players hoped for additional content, such as new quests or dialogue, to enrich the narrative experience beyond what was available in the original game.

Summary

  • Overall, while Syberia - Remastered has its strengths, particularly in visual presentation and nostalgia, it falls short in several areas that fans of the original game hold dear. Many recommend waiting for patches or considering the original game for a more authentic experience.
