Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is an RPG set in a fantasy world inspired by Arthurian legends, developed by the independent Polish studio Awaken Realms Digital.

The project was completed partially using funds raised from a crowdfunding campaign to create a board game under the same title. The crowdfunding for the board game Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon was a huge success. Suffice it to say that gathering the necessary amount took less than a minute, while a total of nearly 5 million pounds was collected.

During development, the concept of the game completely changed. Initially the developers planned to create an isometric RPG, but they ultimately decided to present the action from a first-person perspective (FPP).

Gameplay

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon features an open world. While exploring it, we discover grim locations and meet their inhabitants, complete various quests, and also make choices that affect the course of the story.

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon review: In the shadow of Oblivion

It’s clear that The Fall of Avalon aims for Bethesda-level ambition without the resources to fully back it up. Still, beneath the rough edges lies a rich RPG experience that—when it works—keeps you engaged for hours.

COGconnected: 80 / 100 by Mark Steighner

Despite its lack of refinement, Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is entertaining and addictive. It has a sprawling story and world to explore with dozens of hours of content. Its combat is more effective and engaging than you might expect. It’s a bit messy to be sure, but fans of classic RPGs are almost certain to enjoy Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon’s take on Arthurian mythology and old-school roleplaying games.

The main pros of the game

  • Atmosphere and Worldbuilding: The game excels in creating a dark, immersive atmosphere that captures the essence of Arthurian legends with elements of body horror and moral ambiguity. Many players praised the lore and the depth of the world.
  • Combat Mechanics: The combat system is generally well-received, with a mix of melee, ranged, and magic attacks. Players enjoyed the weighty feel of melee strikes and the variety of weapons available, including different types of bows.
  • Meaningful Choices: Players appreciated the moral complexity of choices in quests, where decisions lead to different outcomes and consequences, adding depth to the narrative.
  • Exploration: The game encourages exploration, rewarding players with various points of interest and lore-rich locations. Many users enjoyed the sense of discovery throughout the world.
  • Unique Quests: Unlike typical fetch quests, many side quests are engaging and offer interesting narratives, keeping players invested in the story.

The main cons of the game

  • Act 3 Issues: The quality of Act 3 is often criticized for feeling rushed, with many players reporting bugs, unpolished quests, and a lack of engaging content compared to the earlier acts.
  • Balancing Problems: Players noted issues with combat difficulty, particularly how the game becomes unbalanced as characters level up, making some encounters trivial while others are excessively challenging.
  • Technical Issues: Several users reported bugs, performance issues, and a lack of polish in various aspects of the game, including animations and enemy AI.
  • Repetitive Quests: While many quests are engaging, some players pointed out that certain fetch quests felt repetitive and lacked depth, especially in the later acts.
  • NPC Interaction: Many found NPCs to be lifeless, with limited interactions outside of quest-giving, which detracted from the immersion of the game world.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • More Side Quests: Some players expressed a desire for more diverse side quests and engaging storylines akin to those found in larger RPGs like Skyrim.
  • Better Crafting System: Users felt that the crafting and alchemy systems were underdeveloped and could use more variety and depth.
  • Improved Leveling System: There were calls for a more intuitive leveling system that doesn't railroad players into specific builds, allowing for more flexibility in character development.
  • Enhanced Enemy Variety: Players noted a lack of enemy diversity, especially in later acts, which led to combat feeling stale.
  • Localization Support: Some reviews mentioned the need for additional language support, particularly for non-English speaking players.

Summary

  • Overall, while Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon has garnered a lot of praise for its atmosphere and storytelling, it also faces significant criticism for its balancing issues, technical problems, and the quality of content in Act 3. Many players remain hopeful for future updates and improvements from the developers.
