Avowed is an action RPG developed by Obsidian Entertainment studio. This team's portfolio includes projects such as Pillars of Eternity and The Outer Worlds series.

Avowed and Pillars of Eternity

Avowed takes us on a journey to the fantasy world of Eora, known from the Pillars of Eternity series, or more precisely – to the wild and largely alien land known as the Living Lands. Although there are some references to the Pillars of Eternity games (fans will recognize some of the locations, characters and factions), knowledge of them is not necessary to enjoy the story.

Avowed review: Obsidian sets a new standard

Avowed is so much more than Obsidian’s take on Skyrim. This game sets the standard for what future Western RPGs should strive for. Nearly every option in combat is worth exploring, the companions are fully fleshed out with backstories that beg to be uncovered, and the anti-imperialist message at the center of the larger narrative is full of thoughtful nuance and intrigue. Obsidian has created a wonderful adventure that I can’t wait to start playing again.

ZTGD: 8 / 10 by Ken McKown

Avowed is a game that I was cautiously optimistic about. The Outer Worlds was fine but didn’t hit me as well as I hoped. I am also not a big fan of spending more time chatting with companions unless they are truly interesting, and here, they definitely are. This game just clicked with me and felt like the perfect marriage of stuff like Elder Scrolls and Mass Effect.

GideonsGaming: by Joseph Pugh

Avowed is almost a good game. Its meaningful choices and excellent combat are held back by a trite gameplay loop of open but not-quite-open zones with poor scaling and a bafflingly bad tier system for your gear.

The main pros of the game

  • Beautiful World Design: The game features stunning graphics and a beautifully crafted environment that rewards exploration. Players appreciate the attention to detail in the landscapes and character designs.
  • Satisfying Combat: Many users found the combat system to be engaging, with a variety of abilities and a fun feel to the gameplay. The use of magic and melee combat is well-implemented, providing a dynamic experience.
  • Exploration Rewards: The game encourages exploration, with hidden treasures and optional quests available throughout the world, making it enjoyable to uncover secrets and discover new areas.
  • Interesting Lore and Writing: For fans of the Pillars of Eternity series, the lore and storytelling elements are appreciated, with many dialogues and interactions contributing to the overall narrative.
  • Character Customization: Players can build their characters in various ways, allowing for some flexibility in playstyle.

The main cons of the game

  • Limited RPG Elements: Many users noted a lack of depth in character progression and build diversity. The game simplifies many traditional RPG mechanics, which may disappoint fans expecting more complexity.
  • Static NPCs and World Interaction: The world feels lifeless due to NPCs being static and lacking meaningful interactions. Players can loot without consequences, which detracts from immersion.
  • Repetitive Combat and Enemy Variety: While combat is initially fun, it can become repetitive due to a limited variety of enemies and lack of challenge as players progress.
  • Bland Main Story and Quests: The main narrative and side quests are often seen as uninspired and lacking depth, with predictable outcomes and minimal impact from player choices.
  • Performance Issues: Some players experienced crashes and performance drops, particularly in towns, which detracted from the overall experience.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Deeper Progression Systems: Users expressed a desire for more intricate character builds, skill checks, and a more complex progression system akin to previous Obsidian titles.
  • Immersive Realism: Players noted the absence of a crime system, a reputation system, or consequences for actions, which are typically expected in RPGs.
  • More Engaging Companion Dynamics: Although companions have backstories, their interactions and growth throughout the game are seen as lacking, with many feeling like mere accessories rather than impactful characters.
  • Variety in Loot and Crafting: Players wanted a more robust crafting system and a greater variety of loot, as much of what they found was seen as generic or uninspired.

Summary

  • Overall, Avowed is viewed as a visually appealing and enjoyable game that falls short in its RPG elements and narrative depth, particularly for fans of the genre looking for a more immersive experience.
