Avowed

Avowed is an action RPG developed by Obsidian Entertainment. The studio is known for such games as Pillars of Eternity and The Outer Worlds.

Plot

Avowed is set in a fantasy land of Eora known from Pillars of Eternity, more specifically - in a wild, mostly undiscovered region known as the Living Lands. Though the game does contain some references to Pillars of Eternity (fans should recognize some locations, characters and factions), one does not need to know the series to enjoy the story.

We play as an envoy of the Aedyr Empire, having arrived in the Living Lands to investigate a mysterious plague. As it turns out, most residents do not like our presence there. Fortunately not everyone - our greatest ally will be Kai, an Aumaua and former soldier, current mercenary.

Mechanics

Avowed is a first-person game (FPP). Before the game proper begins, we must create our character. The game's world is not fully open. It consists of several diverse open locations which can be freely explored. The game features plenty of story missions, accompanied by numerous side missions and optional activities.

While traveling through harbor cities and vast densely vegetated landscapes we'll often encounter enemies. These include sentient foes, aggressive fauna and dangerous flora. Combat is fast-paced, letting us wield magic, melee weapons (like a sword and shield) and ranged weapons, like bows or guns.

On our way we'll meet some potential companions. One of them is the aforementioned Kai, whose idealistic and pragmatic nature doesn't dissuade him from cracking unusual jokes. As we progress through the game we develop our character, unlocking new abilities and upgrading already owned ones. All this lets us face gradually greater challenges.

Technical aspects

Avowed boasts high-quality graphics. The game's colorful artstyle may be reminiscent of one of the studio's previous games, The Outer Worlds.
