A third-person RPG with an open world, featuring additional strategy and survival mechanics, bringing it close to the Mount & Blade series. Tales of Old: Dominus has us playing as Eric, who survived a massacre. He starts by simply trying to stay alive, but he gathers an army and conquers lands over the course of the game.
The theme of revenge is often used in productions where we accompany a character on their journey "from zero to hero". Among such titles is Tales of Old: Dominus, an RPG enriched with clearly defined strategy and survival elements. This game may evoke associations with the Mount & Blade series and it was developed by Hvmana Industries.
In Tales of Old: Dominus, events are viewed from a third-person perspective (TPP).
The game offers us an open world that we can freely explore on foot or on horseback. During the game we take on the role of Eric, the sole survivor of the massacre of his village. The path to exacting justice on the invaders is a long one.
First, the protagonist must gather essential resources and set up a makeshift camp, as well as acquire weapons and useful tools. As he travels through the land, our character meets its inhabitants, completes quests, and faces opponents in dynamic duels. Eric can eliminate enemies using melee or ranged weapons. His arsenal may include a mace, sword and shield, bow, or crossbow.
The battles are brutal, and the hero either kills defeated enemies or shows them mercy. Nevertheless, adversaries often outnumber the protagonist, so when acting alone, it's wise to make use of the stealth system. It takes into account the noise we generate and the visibility of our character (effectively reduced by staying in shadows or foliage).
Survival mechanics also play an important role here. We must take care of the protagonist's needs by quenching his thirst, alleviating hunger, and monitoring his body temperature. Sources of food can include hunting, farming, traders, or theft. It's important not to ignore weather conditions, as rain, snow, or heat can cause us problems.
As we progress, we develop the hero. The game features a classless system, meaning we can freely mix different skills, leading to a swordsman, archer, thief, or a combination of these professions.
That's not the end, as by rebuilding his position in the game world, Eric gains allies who agree to follow him into battle. Over time, the hero's camp transforms into a fully-fledged settlement, and an army grows under his command, which he can lead into battle. The game allows us to construct new buildings and upgrade existing ones, as well as manage additional villages, cities, and fortresses. We command our troops in real-time, leading them into battles against enemies.
Tales of Old: Dominus takes us to a medieval world. The introduction of the so-called right of the first night (Prima Nocta) by the corrupt nobility led to the outbreak of a rebellion that ended with the Battle of the Brides. Although most of the rebels were slaughtered, some managed to survive the massacre. Among them is the main protagonist of this production, Eric of Woldham, whose village was completely destroyed and whose sister was kidnapped. From that point on, his goal is to rescue the girl and exact revenge on the oppressors.
