Temtem: Swarm is an action game with roguelike elements, inspired by Vampire Survivors and other arena survival titles. The game is the result of a collaboration between the Crema team, who oversees the development of the brand, and the GGTech Studios.

Mechanics

In Temtem: Swarm we watch the action from a bird's eye view. During the game, we take control of one of the creatures resembling Pokemon characters and fight for survival in arenas dominated by other Tems. Dynamic skirmishes have us face both hordes of ordinary enemies, whose greatest strength is their numbers, and much more powerful bosses.

On the battlefield, we make use of various equipment, attacks, offensive and defensive skills, as well as various enhancements. We expand our range as we progress, acquiring resources and new equipment, unlocking abilities and improving those already possessed, as well as advancing to the next levels, until we reach the final form. It doesn't end there, because along the way we gain access to other Tems, each of which has an individual set of strengths and weaknesses.

The main pros of the game

  • Visuals and Aesthetics: The game features charming graphics and a vibrant art style that resonates well with fans of the Temtem universe.
  • Co-op Gameplay: The ability to play online with friends enhances the experience, making it more enjoyable and engaging.
  • Tem Variety: There are many different Tems to unlock, each with unique abilities and traits, which adds a layer of strategy to gameplay.
  • Progression System: The game has a solid progression system that encourages players to explore different builds and strategies.
  • Engaging Gameplay: The core gameplay loop is described as addictive and fun, with the potential for satisfying power fantasies as players level up their characters.

The main cons of the game

  • Repetitive Grind: Many users feel that the game is overly grindy, requiring excessive repetition of earlier stages to unlock abilities and upgrades for different Tems.
  • Limited Build Variety: Players have noted that the build variety is lacking, with many characters feeling similar and not enough unique abilities to create diverse strategies.
  • Unbalanced Mechanics: Certain abilities and Tems are perceived as overpowered, leading to a lack of meaningful choices during gameplay.
  • Frustrating Unlock System: The requirement to unlock abilities and upgrades through specific challenges can feel tedious and punishing, especially when it forces players to play characters they may not enjoy.
  • Technical Issues: There have been reports of bugs, crashes, and connectivity issues in multiplayer mode, impacting the overall experience.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Global Skill Tree: Players expressed a desire for a universal skill tree that would allow for shared upgrades across different Tems, rather than requiring individual grinding for each character.
  • More Unique Abilities: The game could benefit from a wider variety of abilities and techniques that interact in more interesting ways, enhancing the strategic depth.
  • Improved Progression Clarity: Many users found the Kudos system and ability unlocks confusing, suggesting that clearer communication of objectives and rewards is needed.
  • Better Balancing: There’s a call for improved balancing of characters and abilities to ensure that no single Tem becomes the clear choice for optimal play.
  • Endless Mode Improvements: Players have pointed out that the Endless mode could use better scaling and balancing to make it more enjoyable and less punishing.

Conclusion

  • While Temtem: Swarm has several appealing aspects, including its visuals and co-op gameplay, it faces significant criticism regarding its grindy nature, lack of build variety, and technical issues. Many players see potential in the game but feel it needs further refinement and content to reach its full potential.
