Release Date: cancelled
A cancelled TPP shooter, which was in development by Ubisoft. The Drift (code name) was supposed to offer modular weapons, crowds of NPCs reacting to our actions, as well as a stealth system. The project was eventually abandoned and replaced by Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell.
After Ubisoft decided to close the Ubisoft New York studio in 1999, the project they were working on at the time was taken over by the Ubisoft Montreal team. We're talking about The Drift (code name), a conceptual shooter that ultimately was not finished, giving way to the game Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell.
The Drift was supposed to be a third-person (TPP) shooter. During the game, we were supposed to embody a hero equipped with a modular weapon, which would serve him to eliminate opponents, but also function as a grappling hook launcher. Additionally, it would be equipped with various view modes.
In addition to this, The Drift was supposed to feature a system responsible for the realistic behavior of both individual NPCs and entire crowds. When stealth elements began to be added to the game, the publisher decided to cancel it. However, some of its elements were used in the studio's next project, which was the aforementioned Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell.
Initially, The Drift was supposed to take us to an alternative, retro-futuristic version of the 1970s, presenting us with a vision of a destroyed Earth, whose inhabitants would live in cities built on rocky remnants.
Later, experiments were conducted with inspirations from James Bond, and then the possibility of linking this project with the novel The Sum of All Fears was considered.

The video game industry has it that other projects are built on the ruins of some. Such was the fate of The Drift from Ubisoft, which can be considered the prototype of the Splinter Cell and Assassin's Creed series.
