Japanese studio One or Eight has made itself known to gamers through such games as Earth's Dawn and Lost Epic. For the purpose of one of their next projects, the team has teamed up with Alliance Arts, which has resulted in the turn-based strategy with RPG elements described here, entitled The Great Villainess: Strategy of Lily.

The production allows us to play the role of Princess Scarlet, who, after being falsely accused of kr?lob?y, is rescued by the title Lily. From now on, her goal becomes unleashing a revolution against the Empire and overthrowing the hard-line government in power. How her further fate will turn out largely depends on our actions and decisions.

Gameplay

In The Great Villainess: Strategy of Lily the gameplay takes place on a continent ruled by the aforementioned Empire.

Ship

Our command center is a ship belonging to Lily, aboard which we move around the game world. It is equipped with streaming technology, allowing us to control the consciousness and emotions of the masses. Thanks to it, we gain allies over time and can manipulate the battlefield.

Turn-based skirmishes and enemy recruitment

Turn-based skirmishes with enemies are the salt of the gameplay here. After winning a battle, we can decide whether we want to get rid of the enemy commander or drag him to our side. The former provides Scarlet with a boost in stats and skills, while the latter solution increases the size of our army. Due to the fact that we start the game almost completely alone, the ability to recruit enemies comes in handy especially at the beginning of the game.

Relationships with NPCs

The game doesn't end there, as in between battles we can get to know our allies better. Some of them are equipped with unique stories, and we gain access to them as their trust in Scarlet grows. Relationships with allies are worth nurturing also because this way we unlock powerful combined skills. There is no shortage of romance opportunities here either.

The main cons of the game

  • Difficulty and Grinding: Many users found the game to be overly difficult, particularly in later chapters, where enemies can be significantly stronger. This leads to a grind-heavy experience, especially for underleveled characters.
  • Repetitive Gameplay: Some users mentioned that the combat can become tedious, primarily due to the need to grind for experience and the limitations of the three-turn combat system.
  • Performance Issues: There are reports of lag and crashes, particularly during cutscenes, which detracted from the overall experience.
  • Limited Character Development: While the main characters are well-developed, some side characters feel underutilized, and the bond system may not impact the narrative as much as players hoped.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • New Game Plus (NG+): Players expressed a desire for a NG+ mode that would allow them to carry over character stats and experience for subsequent playthroughs, making it easier to explore different endings.
  • Improved Leveling System: Users suggested that experience points should be awarded for participation in battles, not just for killing enemies, to help underleveled characters catch up.
  • Combat Speed Options: A request for a middle-ground combat speed (between 1x and 4x) to make battles feel less drawn out while still allowing for strategic planning.
  • Expanded World and Content: Some players felt the game was short and would have benefited from additional maps, characters, or a more extensive storyline.

Summary

  • Overall, "The Great Villainess: Strategy of Lily" is generally well-received for its engaging characters and unique gameplay, but it faces criticism for its difficulty, grinding nature, and some performance issues.
