The Room is an independent puzzle game with elements of point-and-click adventures and hidden object games. The title is the responsibility of the Fireproof Games team, established in 2012, which has been honoured with a number of industry awards and distinctions for its production (including the BAFTA award for the best British game of the year and nominations for artistic achievements, best debut and best mobile game).

The action of the production takes place in the title room, in the middle of which there is a mysterious safe. The player's task is to uncover all his secrets. The game mixes different genres, but it is mainly based on solving logical puzzles, which consist in moving individual elements, searching for mysterious hiding places where special objects are hidden, or manipulating the key head to match the unusual lock. In addition, during the game we use a special glass, showing things that we cannot see in normal viewing mode.

Nintendo Life: 7 / 10 by Gavin Lane

The quality of The Room and the atmosphere it conjures is undeniable, and it's certainly worth checking out if you haven't played before. It's a pleasure to see some well-implemented pointer controls added to a classic touchscreen title, and the fact that this seminal release is now available on a dedicated gaming device is cause for celebration. Be aware that it's a slight offering by home console standards, though – it's crying out to be part of a compilation release with its three sequels. Perhaps one for the Wishlist, then, but it's a winner while it lasts.

There are plenty of reasons to avoid buying ports of mobile games on Steam, but The Room is the exception to that rule. So many of these games feel like a quick cash-grab, but I am happy to say that The Room is not one of them.

TrustedReviews: 4 / 5

The Room's puzzles are engaging and accessible, able to make you feel like you're using your brain without leaving you frustrated. This alone is enough for it to be held up as a success, but the game becomes something more interesting and affecting in how it uses these puzzles as the basis for subtle horror – not in its cliched story about an over-ambitious researcher, but the progression into its boxes-within-boxes, each impossibly larger than the last. It is disorientating, even nightmarish.

  • Hint System: The inclusion of a hint system is appreciated, allowing players to receive guidance without completely spoiling the challenge.
  • Short and Sweet: The game is relatively short, making it a perfect pick-up-and-play experience for those looking for a quick puzzle-solving session.

The main cons of the game

  • Short Length: Many users noted that the game is quite short, often completing it in just a couple of hours, which may leave players wanting more.
  • Simplicity of Puzzles: Some players found the puzzles to be too easy or lacking in challenge, leading to a sense of boredom or disappointment for those seeking more complex problem-solving experiences.
  • Controls: There are mentions of controls being somewhat awkward or imprecise, especially when transitioning from mobile to PC, which can disrupt the gameplay experience.
  • Underdeveloped Story: While there is a narrative element, many reviews indicate that the story feels minimal or secondary to the puzzles, lacking depth or significant development.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Replayability: Several users pointed out that the game lacks replay value, as once the puzzles are solved, there is little incentive to play again.
  • More Complex Puzzles: Some players expressed a desire for more challenging puzzles that require deeper thinking or deductive reasoning, rather than just finding hidden objects.
  • Enhanced Narrative: A call for a more engaging and developed storyline that ties into the puzzles more meaningfully was noted, as many felt the existing narrative was not compelling enough.
  • Alternative Interaction Modes: Suggestions for more varied interaction methods (like using the lens in unexpected ways) were mentioned to enhance exploration and discovery within the game.

Summary

  • Overall, "The Room" is well-received for its visuals and engaging gameplay but could benefit from a longer playtime, more complex puzzles, and a richer narrative experience.
