The Serpent Rogue

The Serpent Rogue is an action adventure game set in a medieval fantasy world starring an alchemist. The game was developed by the Ukrainian team Sengi Games from the city of Rivne with the support of Team 17, known for the Worms series and the release of many projects from independent developers.

Plot

In The Serpent Rogue we find ourselves in an almost typical fantasy world, mixing medieval times with beasts from myths. However, the hero is not a brave knight, mercenary or other adventurer setting off against the dragon. Here, the enemy is a mysterious plague, which quickly spreads to the surrounding lands. A Warden wearing the iconic outfit of a plague doctor tries to deal with the threat, who hopes to nip the problem in the bud.

Game mechanics

The Serpent Rogue focuses on exploration of a procedurally generated world full of wild beasts and other dangers. The main goal of the game is to find a way to stop the plague, which requires visiting many locations and thorough investigation. From time to time we also meet NPCs, whom we can help or use their services. We watch everything from the third person perspective (TPP) in isometric view.

In each place we'll find many things to explore, thanks to which we can learn more about the plague, but also about the local flora and fauna. This information and resources found will allow us to brew potions with different effects, including potions that transform us into other people or beasts or allow to tame the latter (including the undead). The game encourages you to experiment, although it's better to take the time to thoroughly research an item before using it in new recipes.

However, crafting in The Serpent Rogue is not only the art of making potions. We can also cook food and create and improve tools, including weapons necessary to survive in a hostile environment. Enemies are not just an easy source of resources - a direct fight with them can end tragically without proper knowledge and preparation. In addition, the plague that torments the game world also causes a variety of phenomena that can prove deadly in their consequences.

The decisions made by the player are also important here, and they do not come down only to the plot choices. The accumulation of many animals in one place can attract the attention of predators and, as a result, our "flock" will not be left even a hoof or claw. Even storing food in a crate can have unpleasant consequences - as no hiding place is safe from rats spreading disease.

Technical aspects

The Serpent Rogue was developed on Unity technology, known from many indie games. 3D graphics with rather angular environmental objects unveils the game's budget , but the developers made sure that visually the game was pleasing to the eye. To this end, the developers used, among other things, cel-shading technology, which gives the whole thing a somewhat cartoonish style.
