The Talos Principle 2: Road to Elysium is the first expansion to the science fiction-themed puzzle game, released in 2023. The add-on was developed by the authors of the original, i.e. the Croteam team, which supervises the development of the series, and whose portfolio also includes the Serious Sam series, which is different in genre and theme.

Plot

The Talos Principle 2: Road to Elysium brings three new story chapters, the action of which takes place after the events presented in the base version of the game.

  1. In the ancient Egypt-inspired chapter Orpheus Ascending, which focuses on the philosophy of love, death and resurrection, Hypatia and Sarabhai play the main roles. During the game, we take on the role of 1K and delve into Sarabhai's mind to recover fragments of her shattered personality.
  2. Isle of Blessed allows us to better know Jakut and Miranda, who join Cornelius and Athena on a tropical, Caribbean island.
  3. In the Abyss takes us to a flying archipelago. Our task is to uncover the mystery of Byron's fate after being imprisoned in the Megastructure, as well as to get to know the original Elohim, listen to Athena's dark thoughts, and face our own failures.

The main cons of the game

  • Inconsistent Puzzle Difficulty: Some users found the difficulty levels to be inconsistent across the three parts, with "Orpheus Ascending" being considered too easy and "Into the Abyss" overly complex and frustrating.
  • Overemphasis on Laser Mechanics: A significant portion of puzzles, especially in "Orpheus Ascending" and "Into the Abyss," relied heavily on laser mechanics, which some players found repetitive and tedious.
  • Narrative Weakness: While some story elements were appreciated, others felt that the narrative lacked depth compared to the main game, with certain parts being perceived as shallow or overly philosophical.

  • New Mechanics: Many users noted that the DLC did not introduce any new gameplay mechanics, relying instead on existing ones, which some felt limited the potential for innovative puzzle design.
  • Greater Variety in Puzzles: A desire for more diverse puzzle types beyond laser-based challenges was expressed, as players felt that the DLC heavily leaned on one mechanic.
  • Improved Narrative Integration: Some players wished for a more cohesive narrative that offered deeper exploration of philosophical themes, rather than just character dialogues and interactions.
  • Less Frustration in Puzzles: A call for puzzles that do not require excessive resetting or trial and error was noted, with players advocating for a design that allows for more intuitive problem-solving.

Summary

  • Overall, "Road to Elysium" is seen as a commendable expansion that enhances the experience of "The Talos Principle 2," despite some criticisms regarding puzzle design and narrative depth.
