A mix of a turn-based strategy and a tactical RPG, inspired by the Heroes of Might and Magic series. Thorny Times allows us to command a group of mercenaries in a Medieval fantasy universe. Our goal is to protect the kingdom from hostile beings. We travel the map, seize castles and engage in turn-based combat.
Thorny Times is a combination of a tactical RPG and a turn-based strategy, set in a quasi-medieval fantasy universe. Inspired by HoMM: Olden Era, this independent title was almost entirely created by Belarusian Nikolay Armonik, co-creator of Legends of Eisenwald.
We lead a small group of mercenaries, exploring a two-dimensional map in a style known from the HoMM or Disciples series. We defeat successive enemies, including non-human creatures. Each team member has individual equipment and a skill tree, which we tactically use in turn-based battles.
Combat requiring strategic thinking and it may resemble puzzles. For example, we must deal with a cannon that takes life in the first round, or adversaries who are immune to physical weapons.
In the multi-threaded storyline of Thorny Times, there is no lack of economic element. To provide our small army with food and shelter, we capture and maintain castles. We often also have to defend villages from the enemies besieging them.
Together with the game, we receive an extensive tool for creating our own scenarios. The editor in Thorny Times allows for creating both intense battles and adventures with a large amount of text and a branching storyline.
Thorny Times runs on the Defold engine.
