Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness for PC and PS2 is another instalment of the world-famous archaeologist’s adventures – Lara Croft. The is a breakthrough in the series – the nature of gameplay is changed dramatically and now it is more dark and mysterious, plus the game introduces elements typical for adventure games and cRPGs.
The action of The Angel of Darkness for PC and PS2 takes place some time after events of Tomb Raider 4: The Last Revelation. The brave archaeologist is falsely accused of murdering her former mentor, Werner Von Croy – this significantly changes the nature of the game. Lara finds herself in a completely new and strange situation. No longer is she the rightful and brave hero, but rather a hiding fugitive who has to unravel the mystery concerning the act of murder and to clear her name.
The facts mentioned above play important roles in the change of the game’s nature. Just like in adventure games or cRPGs, the player needs to solve the puzzle, talk to other characters, and associate seemingly disconnected bits of information. Of course, the game still features exploration of different places (Lara received +150 new moves), but it is no longer the core of the game, rather its component.
There are more changes. Lara gradually improves her abilities and with the progress she becomes stronger, faster, etc. Moreover, The Angel of Darkness introduces a new playable character – Kurtis. He is Lara’s good friend and her right-hand man. Lara is the brains and Kurtis is everything else, namely a bruiser who first shoots, then asks.
Traditionally, The Angel of Darkness offers improved and more attractive visuals (Lara is even prettier – her model has +5000 polygons), and the action takes place in new, extensive locations, like streets in Paris and Prague.
