Viewfinder is a puzzle game in which you transform the world by taking pictures and manipulating perspective. The game combines many different artstyles, resulting in a surreal atmosphere. It's a debut game of a small Scottish studio Sad Owl Studios. It was published by Thunderful Publishing, responsible for many other indie games, such as LEGO Bricktales and Planet of Lana.

Mechanics

The game's world is three-dimensional and observed from a first-person view. The player's objective is to solve puzzles by altering the reality around them and messing with the perspective. This can be done with a polaroid, which can take photos of objects and implement them into the world for various purposes, such as creating passages to previously inaccessible locations. Other pictures, such as sketches, postcards and screenshots, can also be "brought to life". The player also encounters many surreal elements and optical illusions, which can shift depending on the perspective.

COGconnected: 86 / 100 by Jaina Hill

I did however have the best time solving its puzzles, which I’d hate to spoil here. But man, when you turn a photo upside-down and then stuff falls out of it? That moment got me to gasp. And the gravity physics were fun enough to have me playing with them until I made myself a little seasick. Viewfinder doesn’t have the tonal mastery of an exploration game like Myst, but it’s puzzles are second to none in the genre. You should definitely challenge yourself with Viewfinder, the most beguiling puzzle game of the year.

Final Weapon: 3.5 / 5 by Saras Rajpal

Viewfinder is a brilliantly creative puzzle game that constantly forces you to think outside the box through level design that never fails to impress, and a gameplay loop that is fun from start to finish. However, the lackluster narrative, irritating dialogue, and major softlocking glitch prevent it from being truly great.

PC Gamer: 87 / 100 by Robin Valentine

Innovative puzzle design and truly astonishing visual trickery make this puzzle game a must-play-even if it doesn't quite have the space to make the most of its best ideas.
