Void War is a strategy game set in a dark science-fiction universe. It features additional roguelike elements and allows us to command a spaceship. It was strongly inspired by the game FTL: Faster Than Light and this is the debut project of the independent Tundra studio.

Gameplay

In Void War, we play as a chosen and configurable commander of a spaceship, who is searching for the legendary Crypt of Souls. For this purpose, we visit six sectors, planning the travel route thanks to the advance information about points of interest, such as merchants or repair stations.

The battles are randomly generated and take place in real-time. They involve dismantling of enemy ships and boarding actions. We fend off attacks from cultists or space pirates and we command a crew divided into factions with unique characteristics. We equip them with weapons, armor and operational materials, and also adapt thanks to psychic powers. Our ship, apart from weaponry, shields and life support systems, may also have gravity field generators or repulsion weapons.

The main pros of the game

  • Familiar Gameplay: Many users appreciate the game for its resemblance to FTL, which they find engaging and addictive. The core mechanics of ship management and tactical combat are well-received.
  • Expanded Mechanics: The game introduces new features such as crew customization, equipment slots for crew members, and unique abilities (like psychic powers), which add depth to gameplay.
  • Thematic Appeal: The grimdark aesthetic inspired by Warhammer 40K resonates with fans of the genre, enhancing the overall atmosphere of the game.
  • Replayability: The inclusion of multiple unlockable ships, commanders, and a tiered difficulty system (similar to Slay the Spire) encourages repeated playthroughs.
  • Engaging Combat: The emphasis on boarding actions and tactical combat is highlighted as a fun and strategic addition to the gameplay loop.

The main cons of the game

  • Comparison to FTL: Many reviews indicate that the game feels too similar to FTL, leading to mixed feelings about its originality. Some players feel it lacks the charm and depth of the original.
  • Linear Gameplay: Critics point out that the game has a more linear progression with fewer exploration elements and random events compared to FTL, which can make encounters feel repetitive.
  • Lack of Depth in Lore: Several users express disappointment with the game's narrative and world-building, noting that it lacks the engaging story arcs and character development found in FTL.
  • Technical Issues: Some players report bugs, crashes, and a cluttered user interface that detracts from the overall experience.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Exploration Mechanics: Users miss the exploration aspect of FTL, where players could make strategic decisions about which nodes to visit. The game’s path system is seen as too restrictive.
  • Diverse Encounter Types: There is a desire for more varied and interesting encounters beyond combat, as many players feel that the game often resorts to straightforward battles with little narrative engagement.
  • Crew Progression: Some players long for a more meaningful crew progression system, similar to FTL's crew experience, which would enhance attachment to crew members.
  • Visual Clarity: Complaints about the visual design include issues with readability, as many elements are described as too dark or similar in appearance, making it hard to distinguish between different items and systems.

Summary

  • Overall, while "Void War" has garnered positive feedback for its engaging gameplay and thematic elements, it faces criticism for its lack of originality and depth compared to its predecessor, FTL. Users express hope for future updates that could address these concerns and expand the game's content.
