Wall World is a mix of roguelite action and tower defense titles. The core gameplay centers on visiting dungeons and controlling a robotic spider. You explore mines in search of resources, schematics, and new technologies, using the machine to fend off waves of attacking enemies.
Video games have accustomed us to the idea that monsters almost always pose a deadly threat. Wall World described here shows things a bit differently. It is a project at the intersection of roguelite action games and tower defense productions. This work of the independent studio Alawar allows us to take control of a powerful robospider, transforming us from prey into a true hunter. This is all on the condition that we manage to reach the machine in time.
In Wall World the action is viewed from the side.
One of the two pillars of gameplay involves going through procedurally generated mines, which we explore in search of resources, blueprints, and technologies. Throughout successive journeys, we visit diverse biomes, and what we manage to find during these expeditions provides us access to various upgrades. They are crucial as they allow us to venture deeper and, most importantly, face increasingly greater dangers.
The second pillar of gameplay is fighting enemies. Battles with foes attacking the Wall set the rhythm of the game, and the time remaining until the next raid is shown by a clock visible at the top of the screen. Since there is never much time, we must always hurry to reach the robospider left at the entrance to the mine before the attack. The robospider serves both as a mining unit, providing us access to the subsequent layers of the titular Wall World, and as a combat vehicle.
The game allows us to install various weapons in the robospider's body, from machine guns to homing missiles, which we use to fire at attacking enemies, trying to survive their offensive. Additionally, as we progress, we gain access to automatic turrets and repair stations, harvesters that automate the resource acquisition process, as well as other upgrades that further increase our combat potential.
The graphics of Wall World were prepared using pixel art technique.
