If the idea of a future with cyborgs and robots battling each other interests you, and you don't mind a bit of a learning curve, then Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus is probably for you. There were times where battles felt long and drawn out and even a bit slow. A few times, battles felt overwhelmingly difficult. Fans of the Warhammer series may have a better understanding and experience with the game. Overall it was a fun playthrough and should definitely be considered for your next strategy game.

The main pros of the game

  • Atmosphere and Soundtrack: The game is praised for its immersive atmosphere, with many users highlighting the exceptional soundtrack and sound design that enhance the Warhammer 40k experience.
  • Tactical Gameplay: The turn-based combat is generally well-received, with many players enjoying the strategic depth and customization options for Tech-Priests. The mechanics, particularly the Cognition Points system, add a unique layer to the tactical gameplay.
  • Lore and Presentation: The game effectively captures the lore of the Adeptus Mechanicus and the Warhammer 40k universe, making it appealing to fans of the franchise. The writing and character interactions are also noted as highlights.
  • Customization: There is a wide range of customization options for Tech-Priests, allowing players to tailor their builds and strategies.

The main cons of the game

  • Repetitiveness: Many players noted that the gameplay can become monotonous over time due to limited mission variety and repetitive combat scenarios. The same enemy types and environments are encountered frequently.
  • Difficulty Curve: The game starts off very challenging, which can be frustrating for new players, but becomes significantly easier as players progress and unlock upgrades, leading to an imbalance in difficulty.
  • Slow Animations: Several reviews mention sluggish animations during combat, which can detract from the overall experience and make battles feel tedious.
  • User Interface Issues: The UI has been described as clunky and unintuitive, with a lack of tooltips and clear information regarding mechanics, making it difficult for players to navigate and understand the game fully.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • More Dynamic Exploration: Players expressed a desire for more engaging exploration mechanics, as the current system feels too simplistic and punishes thorough exploration due to the Awakening Meter mechanic.
  • Variety in Missions and Environments: Many reviews indicate a need for more diverse mission objectives and environments to keep the gameplay fresh and engaging.
  • Improved Difficulty Balancing: Users suggested that a better scaling of difficulty across the game would enhance the experience, as the early game is significantly harder than the late game.
  • Speed-Up Options: There is a call for an option to speed up animations and combat sequences to reduce downtime during battles.

Summary

  • Overall, "Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus" is appreciated for its unique setting and tactical gameplay, but it faces criticism for repetitiveness, pacing issues, and UI design. The anticipation for the sequel suggests that players hope for improvements in these areas.
