The Russian Owlcat Games studio announced two new science fiction RPG games (Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy and The Expanse: Osiris Reborn) in mid-2025. At the same time, it was still developing its previous work in a similar convention - Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader from December 2023. The developer released a story expansion for it called Lex Imperialis (the second one after Void Shadows).

New features in the expansion

Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader - Lex Imperialis introduces a new, approximately 15-hour long storyline, as well as pets, companion, and a new faction.

Judge and the accused

The main plot of the expansion focuses on the von Valancius family. While uncovering the dark secrets of this family, we must navigate between justice, betrayal, and duties, getting to know the process of the Great Harvest and the collection of the imperial tithe inside out. By embodying both the judge and the judged, we make significant choices that affect not only the outcome of our mission, but the entire Koronus Expanse.

Companion and pets

The expansion brings a new companion for our team. Officer Solomorne Anthar is assisted on the battlefield by his faithful companion - a cybernetic mastiff. During the game, we can get to know this character better and discover their turbulent past, as well as start a romance with them.

The main pros of the game

  • Lore and Writing Quality: Many players appreciated the lore compliance and the quality of writing, particularly noting that the DLC is rich in Warhammer 40,000 lore.
  • New Features: The introduction of the new Arbitrator origin and the Overseer archetype was well-received. Players enjoyed the mechanics of dual-wielding shotguns and using familiars in combat, which added depth to gameplay.
  • Unique Locations: The DLC introduces interesting new locations, particularly the feudal world, which some players found immersive and distinct from previous settings.
  • Character Integration: The integration of the new companion, Solomorne, and his interactions, although mixed in reception, were seen as a positive addition to the game.
  • Gameplay Mechanics: The addition of shields and new combat mechanics provided a fresh experience for players, enhancing the tactical options available during battles.

The main cons of the game

  • Shorter Content: Many players felt that the DLC was significantly shorter than advertised (15 hours), with some completing it in around 7-8 hours. This led to disappointment regarding the value for money.
  • Bugs and Technical Issues: Several reviews mentioned bugs, particularly in quests and character interactions, which detracted from the overall experience. Some reported game-breaking bugs and issues with cloud saves.
  • Weak Story Integration: Compared to the previous DLC, Void Shadows, the story in Lex Imperialis was seen as less impactful and more disconnected from the main game's narrative. Players noted that the quests felt rushed or incomplete.
  • Character Development: Solomorne, the new companion, received mixed feedback. Many found him to be a flat character with little development or reactivity compared to other companions, particularly Kibellah from the previous DLC.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • More Meaningful Quests: Players expressed a desire for more side quests and character development opportunities, particularly for the new companion. Many felt that the quests were too straightforward and lacked depth.
  • Greater Integration with Main Story: There was a call for the DLC content to be better woven into the overarching narrative of the game, similar to how Void Shadows was integrated.
  • Expanded Character Interactions: Players wanted more dialogue options and interactions with the new companion and other characters, particularly in relation to colony management and key decisions in the game.
  • Quality Control: Some players wished for better quality assurance before release, citing the need for more polish and fewer bugs.

Summary

  • Overall, while "Lex Imperialis" offers intriguing new content and mechanics, it appears to have fallen short of the high expectations set by its predecessor, leading to a mixed reception among players.
