Wigmund. The Return of the Hidden Knights have been adapted to tell a story that is as interesting as possible, inspired by the beliefs also used by J.R.R. Tolkien during the creation of the Middle-earth mythology. The game was developed by a small studio, The Scholastics, which was interested in creating a classic isometric RPG.

Plot

The hero of the game is one of the twin brothers, a renegade of Wigmund, who sets off on an adventure to discover the dark secrets of the New Regime and the truth about his origin. He is a very well-trained warrior, with a great talent for dealing with problems, as a result of which he gets involved in intrigues to overthrow the evil tyrant, Amund.

Each element of the game is designed to be complementary in the storytelling. So we get to know the story not only through the main missions and cinematics, but also by reading books placed in the world of Regime or by performing side tasks. Each of the stories we have experienced has an impact on the world of the game and can change the course of events at a later stage of the game, so we have to watch out for decisions.

An important element of the plot are our comrades. We can build relationships, either positive or negative, with them, which results in learning more about the threads needed to understand history.

Mechanics

The game is a typical example of isometric action RPG. We move our hero by clicking on the places we are interested in, as well as interacting with objects and NPCs. Battles with enemies take place in real time. The combat system, although based on using a mouse, is very arcade. This is due to the need to "draw" attacks on the screen with the use of the mouse rather than simply clicking. So it requires from us both a good sense of how to strike and avoid enemy attacks. Apart from standard opponents, we also face powerful bosses, equipped with unique sets of attacks forcing us to adapt to the situation. The battles are made more attractive by additional skills and a temporary fury of the warrior, unblocked as the fight progresses. We must remember to use our allies properly, who will do better in some situations and worse in others.

In Wigmund. The Return of the Hidden Knights equipment plays a very important role. It was divided into many categories, including the distinction between armor worn on the right or left leg/arm. The main character can be equipped with different types of weapons, from heavy and slow but high damage axes to fast and very limited range daggers. Each of them has its own physical system, so the use of the equipment provides a different feeling.

During the exploration of the open world we will repeatedly get the opportunity to use interactive elements of the environment. For example, in order to overcome the chasm in our path, we will have to turn the crane's arm and go the other way.

Technical aspects

Despite a relatively low budget and a small development team, Wigmund. The Return of the Hidden Knights at the time of its premiere had an eye-pleasing graphic design. Special attention should be paid to the fine-tuning of lighting effects and the quality of our equipment elements. The game is kept in a slightly fairy-tale style.
