A cozy survival game about controlling a mouse in a big, cold forest. The gameplay in Winter Burrow is about exploring the dense forest in search of resources to renovate our burrow. We also meet the land's inhabitants, avoid dangerous insects, and craft various equipment.
Gameplay in most survival games involves the necessity of fighting to survive in inhospitable worlds. Winter Burrow, from the independent Danish studio Pine Creek Games, approaches this theme a bit differently. It is maintained in a cozy convention, and we set the pace of the game and the path we follow during it ourselves.
In Winter Burrow events are viewed from a bird's-eye perspective. During the game we take on the role of a mouse and find ourselves in a vast forest during winter, tasked with restoring the former glory of our family burrow and finding a missing aunt.
This won't be easy, as to settle comfortably in front of the fireplace, our character must traverse the frosty land in search of resources that will enable our survival and allow us the renovation of the home.
Along the way, we meet NPCs, among whom there are potential friends, deal with threats from dangerous insects, and gather resources to craft new tools that improve exploration and allow us to venture deeper into the thicket.
Between expeditions, we return to our burrow, where we rest and bake warm pies. We can decorate our home according to our preferences. We can also customize the appearance of our mouse with self-knitted sweaters to suit individual tastes.
The graphic design of Winter Burrow is kept in a style reminiscent of illustrations from children's books.

Winter Burrow is a pleasant and heartfelt survival game that combines simple crafting, gentle exploration, and cozy narrative. It stands out as a pleasant winter trip with stunning visuals and fun gameplay.
Quest Daily: 6.5 / 10 by Sonia Heng
If you’ve got patience for repetition and love your survival cosies with a dash of challenge, Winter Burrow is a delightful little pick-up. A few small bugs could use patching, but nothing game-breaking. It’s the kind of title best enjoyed with a hot cocoa and a thick blanket — just prepare to do a lot of wandering in the snow.
A Gaming Network: 7 / 10 by Sami-Jo Perruzza
Still, from a critical view, the strong themes don’t make up for the simple gameplay. As a game I reviewed on Nintendo Switch 2, which caters to a younger audience, I appreciate the gentle approach and safe emotional space that kids can still enjoy, but you’ll also notice the missed chance for deeper tension. Imagine if the weather really changed your path, or if your choices about helping others or rebuilding changed the story’s mood. While the story works, I can't help but feel that it was mostly in one tone. Winter Burrow understands mood, framing a story, and emotional subtext, but never really experiments with its own language the way I would have liked. It’s thoughtful, visually articulate, and occasionally poignant...just not ambitious enough in its mechanics or narrative structure to step from “good” into “great.”
