Plot

Witches of the New World is set in an alternate, fantasy version of the 17th-century New World - specifically in Salem, where the notorious witch trials took place. The game's protagonist is Jedediah Hopkins, a professional witch hunter. He arrives at Salem to find out whether the trials were a result of mass hysteria or actual supernatural happenings. Once there, he discovers the presence of a vile cult, summoning hellish creatures to take over the town and its inhabitants' souls. Jedediah must put an end to their heresy before it's too late.

Though Witches of the New World is set in an alternate 17th-century Salem, the main protagonist was based on authentic accounts of witch hunts, while the locations and the town's inhabitants - on historial information about the 17th-century Puritan community.

Mechanics

Witches of the New World uses third-person perspective (TPP). The player must explore Salem and its surroundings, talk to NPCs and complete quests to progress the story. Occasionally we must also make choices, which affect things such as the fates of certain characters.

On our way we encounter numerous enemies, primarily all sorts of monsters. Combat is dynamic, with Jedediah wielding a flintlock pistol to attack enemies from a distance and interrupt their attacks alongside a sword for closer encounters. Though regular enemies can be challenging, the real threat are the occasional bosses. To succeed, we must watch our opponents to find gaps in their defenses, dodge quickly and counterattack when we see an opportunity.

Technical aspects

Witches of the New World runs on the Unreal Engine 5. Though the visuals are decent at best, the atmospheric locations and fearsome opponents may be appealing to some.
