The main pros of the game

  • Enhanced Gameplay Experience: Many users feel that the War of the Chosen (WOTC) expansion significantly improves the base game by adding new content, including soldier classes, enemies, and mission types, making it feel like a new game.
  • Increased Challenge: The introduction of the Chosen enemies adds a layer of strategic pressure, enhancing the game's difficulty and requiring players to adapt their tactics.
  • New Features: The addition of new factions and soldier classes (Reapers, Skirmishers, and Templars) introduces diverse gameplay mechanics and abilities, enriching the overall experience.
  • Replayability: The expansion offers a wealth of content that encourages multiple playthroughs, with randomized elements that keep each campaign fresh.
  • Narrative Depth: The game adds more narrative elements and character development, making the experience more immersive.

The main cons of the game

  • Technical Issues: Some users report frequent crashes, bugs, and performance problems, which detract from the overall experience.
  • Balancing Problems: There are complaints about the balance of new mechanics and enemies, with some feeling that certain additions (like The Lost) disrupt the flow of gameplay and feel like an annoyance rather than a challenge.
  • Complexity and Overwhelm: The new mechanics and mission types can overwhelm players, leading to a feeling of chaos rather than strategic depth. Managing multiple objectives and resources can become tedious.
  • EULA and Privacy Concerns: Many users express frustration over recent updates to the game's Terms of Service, which they perceive as invasive and restrictive regarding modding and data collection.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Improved Endgame Content: Some players feel that the expansion does not adequately enhance the endgame missions or balance the difficulty to match the new content introduced.
  • Better Mod Support: Users desire more freedom to use mods without the risk of bans, especially in single-player modes, as the new EULA restricts modding.
  • More Transparency in Mechanics: There are calls for clearer explanations of new mechanics and abilities, as some players find the changes confusing and poorly integrated.
  • Streamlined Gameplay: A desire for a more relaxed pace and less pressure from multiple simultaneous objectives is noted, as some players feel the game has become overly frantic.

Summary

  • Overall, while XCOM 2: War of the Chosen is praised for enriching the base game and providing a challenging and engaging experience, it is also criticized for technical issues, balance problems, and concerns related to player privacy and modding restrictions.
