Yakuza Kiwami for PS4 is a complex remake of the first installment of Yakuza series. The original version of the game debuted on PlayStation 2 in 2005. All titles in the series were developed by Sega. For many years since its debut the series gained many fans and is especially successful in Japan (where it is known as Ryu ga Gotoku). It even received comic and movie adaptations. Ten installments of the series were released until 2016, including a few spin-offs. Yakuza Kiwami offers not only completely new visuals, but it also introduces changes to gameplay mechanics and previously unavailable story sequences that link it stronger to the prequel released on PlayStation 4.

Plot

Yakuza Kiwami for PS4 takes place in 1995, eight years after the events of Yakuza 0. Kazuma Kiryu, the main protagonist of the series, is a high ranked member of Tojo clan. One night, the patriarch of Dojima family (that works for Tojo) kidnaps a friend of Kazuma named Yumi. A close colleague of the protagonist, Akira Nishikiyama, joins Kazuma in the chase. He reaches the girl as first and he kills Dojima, thus shaking the foundation of Tokyo’s criminal underworld. Kazuma takes the blame for the murder, allowing Nishikiama to escape from the crime scene. All he asks him is to take care of Yumi.

Like a Dragon / Yakuza Game Series

Yakuza (Japanese. Ryu ga Gotoku - Like a Dragon) is a series that began as TPP action adventure games, while in 2020 began a love affair with the jRPG genre. The essence of gameplay in productions under this banner are spectacular clashes, in which we mostly use our own fists, white weapons such as clubs or samurai swords, as well as elements of the environment, such as trash cans or bicycles. Firearms are present, but usually do not play a major role. The protagonists have numerous fighting styles, which we can upgrade. Of great importance are impressive finishers, in which opponents are eliminated in a particularly impressive way.

Destructoid: 8 / 10 by Peter Glagowski

Really, you can't go wrong with Kiwami. I would have liked it if every aspect of the game had been fully redone, but we don't see remakes like this come along often. I can deal with a few stumbling blocks when the core quality of what makes Yakuza so unique and engaging remains untouched. At least now more people can have a chance to experience this classic, which is the best thing about Kiwami's existence.

Nintendo Life: 6 / 10 by Oliver Revolta

No matter how significant the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series might have become, this first instalment is a mixed bag. At times Yakuza Kiwami is full of life and ambition. At other times it's as frustrating and seems too willing to draw things out in a slightly over-indulgent way. Experimenting with the battle system is satisfying for as long as the game gives you space to do it. But the game's pace-killing negatives, the difficulty spikes and the quickly diminishing returns of wandering the Tokyo streets, marred by random battles and fetching items, hold it back from being an easy recommendation. You may well enjoy yourself during your playthrough, but we'd bet a few thousand yen that some of the less-streamlined elements will test your patience.

Yakuza Kiwami on Switch offers a competent handheld experience despite visual cutbacks, and the addition of licensed music in the West is welcome.

The main pros of the game

  • Compelling Story: The game features a gripping narrative filled with emotional depth and character development, particularly regarding Kiryu and his relationship with Nishiki.
  • Refined Combat System: The combat is fluid and dynamic, allowing players to switch styles and execute a variety of moves, which enhances the overall gameplay experience.
  • Majima Everywhere System: This mechanic introduces Goro Majima as a recurring character, providing entertaining encounters and adding humor to the game.
  • Vibrant Side Content: The game is filled with numerous side activities and mini-games, offering players a wealth of content to explore beyond the main story.
  • Visuals and Presentation: The graphics are well-received, showcasing improvements in lighting, particle effects, and animations that enhance the cinematic experience.
  • Cinematic Quality: The motion capture and voice acting are praised, contributing to the game's immersive storytelling.

The main cons of the game

  • Less Content Compared to Yakuza 0: Many players feel that Yakuza Kiwami has fewer activities and side quests compared to its predecessor, Yakuza 0.
  • Frustrating Combat Mechanics: Some users find the combat system clunky and unbalanced, particularly during boss fights, which can be tedious and drawn out.
  • Story Pacing Issues: While the main story is engaging, some players noted that certain sections feel padded or less interesting, particularly towards the end.
  • Difficulty Spikes: Certain encounters, especially with bosses, can be frustrating due to mechanics that seem unfair or overly reliant on specific strategies.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Voiceovers for Side Content: Some players expressed disappointment that many side quests lack voice acting, making them feel less engaging.
  • Expanded World Exploration: Users noted that the game is limited to Kamurocho, missing out on the broader exploration found in Yakuza 0.
  • More Diverse Playable Characters: Players missed the ability to switch between multiple protagonists, as Yakuza Kiwami focuses solely on Kiryu.
  • Improved Boss Mechanics: There were calls for better-designed boss fights that don't rely on frustrating mechanics, such as gun-wielding enemies that disrupt the flow of combat.

Summary

  • Overall, while Yakuza Kiwami is celebrated for its story, combat, and vibrant world, it also faces critiques regarding its content depth and certain gameplay mechanics, especially when compared to Yakuza 0.
