Angelina Jolie could have become one of Charlie's Angels, however, she turned down the opportunity. The actress was at the beginning of her career when an offer came to star alongside Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore in an action movie that became a hit. The studio argued that this could be a great chance for her to become famous, however, the studio's arguments did not convince her.

During an interview with Premiere, Jolie cited the arguments Columbia Pictures used to try to persuade her to take part in Charlie's Angels. They said that this would be one of the rare chances to play a strong female character, to which Jolie replied that she had already had the opportunity to play strong women and it was not that rare at all. They also tried to persuade her with assurances of fame, however, this had “absolutely no appeal” for the actress.

When [Columbia Pictures] sent me the script for Charlie’s Angels, they said there were three reasons I should do it. They said there hadn’t been really good, strong roles for women; that it would make me a big star; and that I would have a fun time doing it. All my roles so far in Gia, Wallace, Playing By Heart, and The Bone Collector have been strong female roles. The idea of being a big STAR has absolutely NO APPEAL to me.

When Charlie's Angels movie was made, unlike Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz, who were already well established actresses, Angelina Jolie was at the beginning of her career and didn't think it would be a good move for her to participate in this kind of production. While it was good for Barrymore and Diaz, it could not necessarily benefit her.

“Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz are already celebrities and they’re going to have great fun spoofing their images with Charlie’s Angels. I’m not at that point in my career, so audiences won’t have as much fun watching me run around in high heels chasing bad guys and flipping my hair.

As a result, we did not see Angelina Jolie in a $264M movie. Instead of her, Lucy Liu played alongside Barrymore and Diaz.
