Assassin's Creed Infinity May be a Live-service Game, Claims Jason Schreier

Jason Schreier revealed what we can expect from the Assassin's Creed series in the future. According to the journalist, the next project associated with the franchise will be a huge live-service game.

IN A NUTSHELL:
  • Jason Schreier reveals what the future of the Assassin's Creed series might look like;
  • The next installment of the series is to be subtitled Infinity and be a comprehensive live-service game;
  • It will enable us to play multiple different story campaigns within a single game developed over years.

The Assassin's Creed series has often been accused of being too stagnant. Origins brought some changes to the form, but the subsequent installments, Odyssey and Valhalla, again seemed to be a continuation of a proven solution. It seems, however, that in the future the series will undergo a revolutionary change. The question is whether the fans will like it. According to Jason Schreier, Ubisoft is working on a huge live-service game set in the Assassin universe.

Bloomberg's journalist revealed that the future of the Assassin's Creed series has already been set. According to his sources, Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft Quebec studios are working on the next installment of the series. This is a change from the tradition, according to which both teams were releasing their own games from the aforementioned universe alternately. Joining forces of two groups was necessary, however, because of the sheer size of the project, which the French company plans.

The next installment of the series is to be called Assassin's Creed Infinity and be a work that Ubisoft intends to develop for many years. The game's scope is to be incomparably greater than any previous installment. The game can even be considered as a kind of platform, which will enable us to play the seubsequent episodes of Assassin's history. Infinity will not focus on one historical period and a chosen hero or heroine. Instead, it will enable us to play through multiple story campaigns taking place in different eras and presenting completely new characters.

With this kind of approach, Ubisoft could develop the project for a long time. As the years go by Infinity would be expanded with new campaigns, which could be compared to previous full installments of the series. They would differ in terms of setting, atmosphere and perhaps even gameplay, but they would all be interconnected at the same time.

Taking into account how the latest installments of the series looked like, the decision to bet entirely on the live-service formula seems logical. A particularly clear example of preparing for this kind of change was Assassin's Creed: Odyssey. Within the campaign of this installment, several main story threads were essentially put at our disposal. The very structure and size of the game, in turn, enabled us to play it for months. As you can see, Ubisoft intends to continue this direction, but this time it goes all the way.

According to Schreier, we have to be patient if we're waiting for Infinity. Sources of the journalist revealed that we should not expect the game's release earlier than in 2024. Bloomberg's author also said that the company's plans may change until then. Many players are still reluctant to accept live-service games.

That said, we did not have to wait long for Ubisoft to react to the Bloomberg's article. In an official statement, the company confirmed that it is working on a project titled Infinity. The French producer admitted at the same time that in game involved its two branches, namely Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft Quebec.
