Atomfall, a post-apocalyptic, open-world, survival game, looks more like Skyrim than Fallout or STALKER in new gameplay material

On the new gameplay materials from Atomfall, we can meet the mysterious Mother Jago and learn a bit about stealth and bow fighting. There was also no shortage of throwing a fire axe at the heads of opponents.

Rebellion Studio released a new, nearly 25-minute gameplay of Atomfall. The material shows the exploration of Casterfell Woods and doing a quest for the enigmatic Mother Jago. The video presents combat using a bow, sneaking around, and exploring an atmospheric and highly unsettling location.

Casterfell Woods exploration and the mysterious Mother Jago

The new video takes players to Casterfell Woods - one of the key locations in Atomfall. This is a gloomy, densely forested place where we will encounter a disguised sect of Druids, who don't tolerate intruders. In these areas, the protagonist meets Mother Jago - a mysterious figure concealing information vital to the story's progression.

The developers emphasize that Atomfall focuses on a demanding but fair combat system. In the presented gameplay footage, it's visible that the clashes aren't just shootouts. The main combat weapons featured in the latest gameplay are a bow and a melee weapon (though a revolver is also seen at the start). Many clashes can be resolved quietly, eliminating enemies without raising alarm. Although the material mainly focuses on the stealth option, there is also no shortage of throwing a firefighter's axe at opponents' heads.

The player's intrusion into the torch-lit castle of the sect is particularly atmospheric. Amusingly, such a scene is more reminiscent of Skyrim than Fallout or S.T.A.L.K.E.R., to which Atomfall is often compared, especially considering the bow wielded by the main character.

Jason Kingsley agrees with the head of Larian

In the context of the upcoming release, the CEO of Rebellion Studio, Jason Kingsley, responded to the recent statements made by Swen Vincke, the creator of Baldur’s Gate 3, regarding the frustrations related to publishers' approach to games. The head of Larian admitted during TGA that he spent his whole life fighting with publishers because they only cared about "quarterly profit," just "numbers."

Kingsley, however, mentioned that this is an issue in virtually every industry and that he is very familiar with such matters. As he admitted in one of his recent interviews:

[…] But I am aware a lot of my colleagues get frustrated from time to time by people who are potentially very good managers but aren't specialists in the computer games area. There are horror stories of people having external producers saying, 'Look, you just need to make fewer bugs, because then it'll be faster to make.' And everybody's going 'Yeah, you're right, yeah. We really shouldn't have decided to put 1,500 bugs in' (via GamesRadar).

Atomfall will hit the market on March 27, 2025. The game will be available on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, and will also be released on Game Pass for PC and Microsoft consoles.
