It would seem that RTS genre is in decline in the last years, though if we look closely, we can notice that those games didn’t die. There are hardly any big AAA titles of this kind, but fans have not disappeared and are still out there. Real Time Strategies are thriving in smaller communities and titles still come out, like for example Dungeons 4.

It should be especially interesting for players who spent countless hours in Dungeon Keeper titles. The strength of those games come from their replayability. However, the maps or scenarios can get repetitive. To counteract that, many similar productions have random maps option or even level editors. How does the situation look like in case of the 4th installment of Dungeons series? Let’s find out.

Random maps in Dungeons 4

6 years divide Dungeons 4 and its predecessor. We would expect that the new games down the line in Dungeons series will be bigger and better, yet it is not necessarily the case. Of course, they are prettier and have some new functionalities, but not all features made it to the new release. It turns out that unlike Dungeons 3, the 4th title in the cycle does not feature random maps.

This is an interesting decision from the developers’ side. Many fans are not happy with this outcome, as they enjoyed random maps in the previous game. It has been officially confirmed that there are no plans to implement them in any foreseeable future, though the players’ feedback has been shared with the creators. Adding your voice to the discussion may influence the development of the title, so if you would like to have this feature added, post a message on the previously linked page.

Level editor in Dungeons 4

Fortunately, the story is different when it comes to level editor. This functionality is already in the game, and you can easily access it by navigating from main menu to extras and then selecting level editor.

This feature must make up for the lack of random maps in the game. Unleash your creativity and come up with the best scenario you can. Keep in mind though that using level editor is more demanding than playing the game itself, so make sure that your computer can handle the task.
