Mafia III reportedly launching on April 26th

Game stores stirred up speculations on Mafia III’s possible release date – April 26th. An official statement from 2K discredits the revelations, but we know better than to take their word for that.

Could Mafia III be launching as soon as on April 26th? This is quite possible if we consider a few facts. A photo from a Best Buy store was posted by IGN (see below), showing a pre-order card for the title with that exact date. Reportedly, the April 26th date was also spotted in GameStop online store, but has since been changed. The official statement from 2K sent to IGN is that this is simply a common case of a store’s inventing a placeholder date for a product. They vaguely said that Mafia III is going to be released in calendar 2016 during Take-Two Interactive’s fiscal year 2017 (i.e. no sooner than April 1st).

Best Buy says Mafia III is going to be available on PS4 and XONE on April 26th (source: IGN).

On the other hand, if that really is a placeholder, then why is it so specific? We would rather expect something like “December 31st” instead of a date three months from now. And why did the same date appear in more than one store? Could that be a coincidence?

The third installment in the successful action game series is being developed by Hangar 13, a team consisting of many of the original creators of the franchise. Mafia III is heading for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
