The summer season has kicked off, and already, the first information is emerging about which shows are most popular. The season, which is packed with interesting anime, has included some surprising gems.
The summer anime season has just begun, but we've already had quite a few releases, among them some major hits. Summer is packed with interesting titles, so there is plenty to watch and choose from.
Niconico, one of the most popular Japanese streaming platforms, which offers as many as 61 anime series from the current season, revealed which ones are the most popular (via PR Times). Popularity was determined based on "views, comments, and entries." The data concerns anime that were released up to July 14, 2025, and focuses on the initial audience reaction immediately after broadcast. Given that they originate from a Japanese streaming service, they only apply to Japan.
Before the start of the summer season, not a lot of people expected Takopi's Original Sin - a very moving series with "one of the most devastating beginnings" - would turn out to be such a hit. The series became quite popular after its release. Fans praised the shocking story for its ability to evoke strong emotions. They also appreciated the visuals of the anime. Takopi's Original Sin received high ratings from viewers, getting 9.3 on IMDb and 8.94 on MyAnimeList.
As you can see, it competes with well-known and popular brands like Dandadan or My Dress-Up Darling, which in the Niconico ranking were placed behind Takopi's Original Sin, but still remained high up, at second and third place respectively.
