Battle for Super Earth in Helldivers 2 didn't have to succeed. Devs had a scenario in store with the fall of the planet

Another take on a „what if...” type of question. This time before us is a dark vision from the world of Helldivers 2, in which Super Earth's resistance has been broken and humanity has succumbed to the forces of the Illuminate.

The heroic defense of Super Earth has been a major hit in recent months (not only in the gaming world), but what would have happened if it failed? For a long time now, fans have been wondering what real impact their decisions had on the future of Super Earth Democracy.

Since the battle was the biggest (and also the most unequal) event since the premiere, it played a crucial part in this reflection. Many fans seemed to think that the outcome of this battle was scripted, which of course, did not fill them with much joy.

A recent discovery by one of the fans, however, shows that the fans' influence was crucial to the narrative. The developers from Arrowhead Game Studios were prepared for a bad ending to the whole conflict (and did everything in their power to make it happen). One of the fans managed to find crucial evidence by digging through the game files.

Super Earth under occupation

What exactly are we looking at? This is a variation of one of the stylized news announcements that the helldivers were supposed to receive after the culmination of the lost battle for Super Earth on their destroyers. It says, although the planet has fallen, Democracy endures - although altered.

The military and the highest-ranking state officials managed to escape the forces of the Illuminate, which cannot be said for the soldiers and citizens fighting on Super Earth itself. Deprived of its home, Democracy suffered huge losses. All contact with the units fighting on the surface of the planet was lost.

In this version of events, the president of Super Earth survives and shares an unfortunate yet rousing message with the rest of the soldiers scattered throughout space. He states that "Democracy is more than just a planet." "As long as citizens remain faithful to the democratic vision of life, Super Earth will endure."

This was likely meant to lead to an occupation narrative. The Helldivers must go "underground," waiting for a good time to strike back.

Although it's a sad turn of events, it's nevertheless an intriguing starting point for further struggles of Super Earth citizens and soldiers (who knows, perhaps at some point we would also see a message about an Earth uprising and we could help support them).

This is extremely important and I'm happy this is out here, the devs aren't holding our democratic hands and scripting the path. We generally could've been booted off our own liberty blessed home if we didn't fight hard enough.

There seem to be more clues indicating how this scenario was supposed to unfold - another fan writes about an interesting bit of dialogue that was allegedly supposed to happen after the failed defense of Super Earth:

There’s also some dialogue from the democracy officer about “new super earth” likely would have come after we chose a new planet to be the HQ.

In the current timeline, however, the defense was successful, and the power of the united helldivers was unstoppable. Kudos to the developers who were able to adapt their plans to the actions of fans - it may be thanks to this open approach that Helldivers 2 is so absorbing, and the victories achieved on the Democracy front are so satisfying.
