IN A NUTSHELL:
- Spider-Man will not be receiving story missions in Marvel's Avengers;
- Crystal Dynamics wants to focus more on content available on all platforms.
Spider-Man is set to arrive in Marvel's Avengers on PS4 and PS5 next week. As it turns out, this event will not be as spectacular as originally anticipated. This is because the superhero will not receive any story missions, as the devs want to devote more time to content available on all platforms.
Up until now, each new hero has been introduced as a dedicated DLC. This means that characters such as Hawkeye and Black Panther would appear in the game along with a number of story quests. Spider-Man's implementation, on the other hand, is referred to as a Hero Event. In this case, the story will be told through sound clips and animated cutscenes, which will be unlocked by completing certain challenges.
The game's director Philippe Therien spoke about the DLCs for Marvel's Avengers. In an interview with IGN, he stated that the decision was made to focus on content available on all platforms.
"We want to spend our efforts on content that everyone can enjoy, so we chose to spend a lot of our energy on the Klaw raid that's coming up at the same time."
It's all the more disappointing given that back in September, one of the developers made a post that suggested Spider-Man would get his own story and cinematics. It was acknowledged at the time that it was specifically about story missions. However, it turns out that this was not the right conclusion.
