Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers Brought Huge Losses for Publisher

It turned out that Marvel's Avengers and Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy made Square Enix lose as much as $200 million. No wonder that the Japanese publisher sold its western studios to Embracer.

The most important event in the video game industry in recent days turned out to be the acquisition of Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montreal and Square Enix Montreal along with the rights to many brands such as Tomb Raider, Deus Ex and Legacy of Kain by the Embracer Group. Now we've learned some context.

Marvel's Avengers and Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy made huge losses

One of the reasons Square Enix got rid of its western teams was the painful failures of their recent projects. Marvel's Avengers and Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy brought the company as much as 200 million in losses.

So it's not hard to understand why the publisher lost patience. Previously, Square Enix also expressed dissatisfaction with the sales of, among others. Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. The publisher tried to increase the popularity of the games from its western teams with the help of Marvel licenses, but as you can see - also this move did not bring the expected results.

Marvel's Avengers will be further developed

The sale of studios has put in question the future of Marvel's Avengers. Embracer Group, however, assured that it intends to take over the development of this game, as well as continue selling it and Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. However, the company must first get approval from Disney to do so.
