If Stormgate players were to point out one element that was most lacking in the RTS game from Frost Giant studio, many would answer without hesitation: Stormgate. Fortunately, the developers came to their senses and decided to give meaning to the title of their game. The result? Stormgate will finally get... stormgates.

For now, the new mechanic will only appear in 1v1 matches, but the creators have already announced that it will also be added to other game modes a bit later. What are Stormgates? According to a post published on Steam, these are portals appearing on the battlefield as a result of the accumulation of a huge amount of energy during a storm. Players who manage to access and open them in battle will receive one of three randomly selected rewards.

The first gate gives a level 1 reward, and the subsequent ones offer increasingly better rewards, which have a real impact on the course of the match. These include, among others, powerful units, a one-time cloning ability, or a storm that destroys everything in its path.

Stormgates are more than a new feature. They're a shift in how we want 1v1—and eventually all modes—to feel. They make 1v1 feel more dynamic and rewarding, and just that much more unpredictable, but in a good way. Games become less about slowly choking your opponent out with a 4-base lead, and more about clutch decisions and comeback potential - explain the developers.

However, that's not all of the new features. The Frost Giant studio also took into account other community feedback, including one of the most frequently mentioned: The Creep camps. The players complained that the monsters guarding powerful items were too challenging to make the attack worthwhile. The devs responded - camps will be completely removed from three ranked maps, although they will still be available in custom games.

Will these changes breathe new life into Stormgate? This is not known yet. The title, created by veterans from Blizzard Entertainment, was released in early access last year and is not doing very well in terms of both the number of players and reviews. According to the Steam database chart, the peak number of players participating in the game simultaneously in recent days has not exceeded 65 people. Additionally, on Valve's platform, only 49% of the reviews are positive, resulting in a "mixed" reception for the RTS.

Time will tell if the Stormgates will prove to be something more than just an expansion. One thing is for sure - this mechanic is make or break for the future of the project.
