The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Releases May 2023

A short trailer shown during today’s Nintendo Direct finally revealed not only the title of the Breath of the Wild sequel but a specific release date as well.

During forty-minute Nintendo Direct, fans of the Legend of Zelda series had to wait until the very end to get a glimpse of some more gameplay, along with the title of the game and release date. Thankfully, all that made it worth the wait. The long-anticipated Breath of the Wild sequel will be titled: The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and will be released on May 12th, 2023.

The trailer revealed less than thirty seconds of actual gameplay, but it still manages to show off a lot of interesting details. Again, as in the previous trailer, Link was shown to be using a power that turns back time or something similar. Link jumps onto a rock as it flies straight up into the air. It’s not clear how exactly this power works yet.

As Link shoots straight upwards, it’s worth noting that the background is grayscaled, perhaps this is an effect of the power being used or something else entirely. Also in the background, a thunderstorm rages around what looks to be more floating landmasses. Perhaps Link will have to clear storms from floating islands to make them safe to travel to somehow.

Finally, after jumping from a floating island, Link lands on some kind of large glider. If this is some kind of flying tool that players will have access to or something else entirely is not yet clear, but fans will be speculating for some time, with over half a year until the game will finally release. That’s if the release date isn’t pushed back again. We’ll be keeping our fingers crossed.

The title for the sequel, Tears of the Kingdom, has a much more somber tone than the original. Of course, there’s no telling what the title could mean yet, but in a previous trailer Link used some kind of power to travel to the floating landmasses above. Link transformed into a sort of water droplet, or a tear, and shot straight up and through onto the top of the landmass. Perhaps this method of traveling has something to do with the Tears of the Kingdom? Until the next trailer or the actual release date, there’s no telling.
