Colin, meanwhile, returns from his summer travels changed, only to discover to his regret that Penelope, who has always appreciated him for who he is, now is giving him the cold shoulder because of the way he treated her earlier. Wanting to win back her friendship, he offers to help her gain confidence so that she can find her husband this season. It turns out that Penelope is a very bright student, causing Colin to face the dilemma of whether his feelings for Penelope really stem from friendship alone. Penelope, on the other hand, finds it increasingly difficult to hide from others that she is Lady Whistledown.
