A Polish studio established by seasoned developers, including former team members of CD Projekt RED and IMGN.PRO. The studio's first project, SEVEN: The Days Long Gone, launched on December 1st, 2017.

History

The Witcher's origins and Seven

The studio was founded in July 2015 under the leadership of Jakub Rokosz, a former senior quest designer at CD Projekt RED. At that time, the team was made up of industry veterans whose credits included The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Hard West, and Kholat. The team soon started collaborating with IMGN.PRO, a partnership that led to their debut project.

Shortly after its formation, Fool's Theory presented its first project, SEVEN: The Days Long Gone, a post-apocalyptic RPG featuring stealth elements. The title offered a deep character progression system, with gameplay unfolding across open, multi-layered areas divided into distinct zones. From the very beginning, the game drew attention with its unique gameplay mechanics - particularly rare for an isometric perspective - and its striking cel-shaded visuals.

SEVEN: The Days Long Gone launched on PC on December 1st, 2017. The title was fairly well received, earning an average score of 68/100 from industry media, according to Metacritic. As it turned out, the developers' work on the project didn't stop there, even despite a brief "detour" helping to create free content for Divinity: Original Sin II. In March 2019, SEVEN: The Days Long Gone received a free expansion called Drowned Past, and in December, the developers launched an enhanced edition of the game for PC and PlayStation 4.

The Thaumaturge

Shortly after, the developers announced a partnership with 11 bit studios to create an RPG codenamed Vitriol. The collaboration proved fruitful, as in February 2022, 11 bit studios announced it had acquired a 40% stake in Fool's Theory. In June 2022, it was revealed that Vitriol, the studio's biggest project yet, would transport players to Warsaw under Russian occupation in the early 20th century, with a story centered on the esoteric aspects of reality.

In February 2023, Fool's Theory shared previously undisclosed information about the project. It was revealed to be The Thaumaturge, in which players take on the role of Wiktor Szulski, the eponymous thaumaturge - a man able to communicate with esoteric beings called Salutors and wield their powers.

The game was planned for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S; although originally set to launch on December 5th, 2023, it was first postponed to February 20th, 2024, and then to March 4th. When it finally came out, it received a fairly positive response from both players and critics.

Interestingly, even though The Thaumaturge is set in an alternate version of early 20th-century Warsaw, it did not feature a Polish dubbing at launch. Its release was pushed back to May 2024.

Back to the roots - The Witcher remake

On October 4th, 2022, CD Projekt RED revealed its plans for the future of The Witcher franchise. One of the announced titles was Canis Majoris, in development by an external studio whose identity had not been disclosed. Soon after, in October 2022, it was confirmed that this mysterious title was The Witcher Remake, a full reconstruction of the first entry in the bestselling Witcher series, developed by Fool's Theory using Unreal Engine 5. In doing so, the studio returned to its roots, crafting a new version of a game that had originally been part of many of its founders' careers.
