The Thaumaturge (earlier known as Vitriol) is an RPG set in an alternate 20th century Warsaw. The game was developed by the Polish studio Fool's Theory, previously known for working alongside the Belgian Larian Studios on games such as Divinity: Original Sin 2 and Baldur's Gate 3, as well as for creating Seven: The Days Long Gone.

Plot

The Thaumaturge is set in 1905's Warsaw. It's a multicultural metropolis, where while the upper classes hold lavish parties, the criminals deal in dark alleys. Reigned by the Russian Tsardom, the city is a melting pot, inhabited by Polish townspeople, Jewish merchants, Russian soldiers and many others.

The Thaumaturge Review - Not Only a Fine RPG, It’s Also a Wonderful Time Machine

Step aside, The Witcher! There is a new RPG game in town to promote Poland. The Thaumaturge may be no match for CD Projekt’s work in terms of renown and scale but it’s way bolder when it comes to having that certain “Polish” feel. Gameplay is decent too.

Windows Central: 4.5 / 5 by Cole Martin

The Thaumaturge's gritty, demon-taming take on the monster collecting genre is a welcome twist. Taking place in 1905 Poland, there is certainly some language and actions in the game that can feel uncomfortable, but it all works with the overarching theme of struggling with mental health and personal flaws. Despite the sensitive nature of the story, Fool's Theory does well to not over sensationalize traumatic story beats. Gameplay is simple and engaging, and the combat is easy to learn but can be challenging on higher difficulties.

VideoGamer: 6 / 10 by Alex Raisbeck

The Thaumaturge shows plenty of promise, but lets itself down somewhat by failing to play to its strengths. Warsaw and its history and culture is a joy to experience when the game properly engages with it, but an insistent focus on a comparatively dull main story ultimately detracts from this for a fun yet frustrating experience.

PC Gamer: 82 / 100 by Maddi Chilton

The Thaumaturge might be a bit light for RPG lovers, but it's a gorgeous, incisive look at a world long past.

  • Multiple Endings: Player choices significantly impact the story's outcome, encouraging replayability to explore different paths and endings.
  • Art and Sound Design: The graphics and atmospheric sound design contribute to an immersive experience, with detailed environments and good voice acting (especially in the Polish version).

The main cons of the game

  • Repetitive Gameplay: Many players noted that the core gameplay loop can become tedious, with excessive walking, clicking, and a lack of meaningful puzzles or challenges.

  • Technical Glitches: Several reviews mentioned bugs, graphical issues, and performance problems, which detracted from the overall experience.
  • Lack of Player Agency: Some players felt that the game often guided them too much, with little room for exploration or deduction, making it feel like a "walking simulator."

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Greater Interactivity: A call for more interactive elements within the environment, allowing for deeper exploration and engagement with the world.
  • Variety in Combat: A wish for a more diverse combat system with different enemy types and strategic depth, rather than repetitive encounters with similar foes.
  • Dynamic Choices: Some players wanted more impactful choices that could influence the game's direction beyond a binary system, enhancing the role-playing experience.

Summary

  • Overall, *The Thaumaturge* offers a unique narrative experience with a strong atmosphere and character development but is hampered by repetitive gameplay and technical issues. It appeals to players who prioritize story and exploration over action-oriented gameplay.
