The Thaumaturge Review - Not Only a Fine RPG, It’s Also a Wonderful Time Machine
Step aside, The Witcher! There is a new RPG game in town to promote Poland. The Thaumaturge may be no match for CD Projekt’s work in terms of renown and scale but it’s way bolder when it comes to having that certain “Polish” feel. Gameplay is decent too.

With deep, detailed, and extremely enthralling setting and characters, The Thaumaturge makes quite the splash on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
CGMagazine: 8 / 10 by Justin Wood
The Thaumaturge blends cosmic horror, mature themes, brutal combat, and a sense of exploration like no game before it. A perfect fit for any horror fan looking to dive into the horrors of the real world.
Screen Rant: 3 / 5 by Leo Faierman
As it stands, though, The Thaumaturge remains quite special overall. Hanging out with Rasputin, shmoozing with turn-of-the-century elites, and exploring some unexpected golem developments with beset Rabbis make for compelling content, even when a few lines in the script fail to land. Anyone taken in by this setting will genuinely want to play The Thaumaturge, and it joins several other recent experimental Slavic fantasy adventures that prove the countless avenues video games have yet to fully explore.
The main pros of the game
- Rich Story and Setting: The game is praised for its compelling narrative and unique setting in 1905 Warsaw, which many players found immersive and authentic. The incorporation of Polish culture and historical details adds depth to the experience.
- Character-Driven Experience: Players appreciate the well-written characters and the moral ambiguity presented in the story, allowing for meaningful choices that affect the narrative.
- Art and Atmosphere: The visual design and art style are frequently highlighted as beautiful and atmospheric, enhancing the overall experience.
- Diverse Gameplay Mechanics: The game features a mix of turn-based combat and detective work, with some players enjoying the strategic elements of combat and the variety of demons (Salutors) to collect and use.
- Voice Acting and Soundtrack: Many reviews commend the quality of voice acting (especially in Polish) and the soundtrack, contributing to the game's immersive environment.
The main cons of the game
- Repetitive Combat: A significant number of players criticized the combat system for being dull and repetitive, often describing it as lacking depth and challenge. Some felt that the combat mechanics did not integrate well with the narrative.
- Linear Storytelling: While choices exist, many players noted that the story remains largely linear, which can detract from the sense of agency and exploration typical of RPGs.
- Technical Issues: Users reported various technical problems, including crashes, bugs, and performance issues, which negatively impacted gameplay experiences.
- Lack of Character Development: Some players expressed disappointment in the character progression and the inability to significantly alter their character's flaws or development throughout the game.
The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users
- Depth in Combat Mechanics: Players expressed a desire for a more engaging and varied combat system, suggesting that it could benefit from additional complexity or options to enhance strategy.
- Greater Character Customization: Reviewers noted the absence of extensive character customization and skill trees, which are often expected in RPGs.
- More Interactivity and Choices: Some players wished for a more intricate detective mechanic, where they could piece together clues and make more impactful choices rather than having the game guide them through conclusions.
- Improved Save System: Users suggested implementing a more user-friendly save system, allowing players to name their save files and have more frequent autosaves, especially before significant events or cutscenes.
Summary
- Overall, "The Thaumaturge" has garnered a mix of praise for its narrative and setting while facing criticism for its combat system, linear storytelling, and technical issues.

The Thaumaturge Description
The Thaumaturge (earlier known as Vitriol) is an RPG set in an alternate 20th century Warsaw. The game was developed by the Polish studio Fool's Theory, previously known for working alongside the Belgian Larian Studios on games such as Divinity: Original Sin 2 and Baldur's Gate 3, as well as for creating Seven: The Days Long Gone.
Plot
The Thaumaturge is set in 1905's Warsaw. It's a multicultural metropolis, where while the upper classes hold lavish parties, the criminals deal in dark alleys. Reigned by the Russian Tsardom, the city is a melting pot, inhabited by Polish townspeople, Jewish merchants, Russian soldiers and many others.
It's also the territory of the titular thaumaturges - people with supernatural abilities, able to perceive and use Salutors, esoteric entities. The game's protagonist, Wiktor Szulski, is one such thaumaturge, here in Warsaw to handle family matters. Using his abilities, he discovers the secrets of the city and its people.
Though the story is mostly fictional, it features appearances of real historical figures.
Mechanics
The Thaumaturge is an isometric game. The player traverses the occupied streets of Warsaw, completing quests, talking to characters and making moral choices. We can wield the Salutors to our benefit while exploring, manipulating other characters and fighting enemies.
Combat is turn-based, letting us wield different weapons, firearms and supernatural abilities. The latter let us deal direct damage and inflict negative statuses on enemies. As we progress through the game, we develop the protagonist and face greater challenges. Wiktor must be cautious, as the stronger he gets, the more his thaumaturge powers drive him to madness...
Technical aspects
The Thaumaturge runs on the Unreal Engine 5. The game's atmospheric artstyle and soundtrack effectively recreate the feeling of living in an early 20th century city.
