The Thaumaturge (earlier known as Vitriol) is an RPG set in an alternate 20th century Warsaw. The game was developed by the Polish studio Fool's Theory, previously known for working alongside the Belgian Larian Studios on games such as Divinity: Original Sin 2 and Baldur's Gate 3, as well as for creating Seven: The Days Long Gone.

Plot

The Thaumaturge is set in 1905's Warsaw. It's a multicultural metropolis, where while the upper classes hold lavish parties, the criminals deal in dark alleys. Reigned by the Russian Tsardom, the city is a melting pot, inhabited by Polish townspeople, Jewish merchants, Russian soldiers and many others.

The Thaumaturge Review - Not Only a Fine RPG, It’s Also a Wonderful Time Machine

Step aside, The Witcher! There is a new RPG game in town to promote Poland. The Thaumaturge may be no match for CD Projekt’s work in terms of renown and scale but it’s way bolder when it comes to having that certain “Polish” feel. Gameplay is decent too.

Impulsegamer: 4.5 / 5 by Nay Clark

The Thaumaturge feels poetic. There is something about it that just feels confident and purposefully precise. It feels like there was a true passion and drive that is effortlessly showcased through the sophisticated story and gameplay elements. The concept of relying on others misfortunes, downfalls, misery, trauma, tragedies, and impurities to get what you want during this historical tension with Russian rule is captivating to say the least. The combat has a lot of neat ideas that prioritizes strategizing, but it feels like there are too many eggs in one basket and the many choices almost undermine the system to begin with, making fighting a bit humdrum. Some hiccups with the graphics don't deter you away from great aspects of the game like the attractive environments, mesmerizing soundtrack, and gripping decision making. The Thaumaturge is an easy recommendation for anyone looking for an intriguing story with intricate and entertaining gameplay.

IGN: 8 / 10 by Jarrett Green

The Thaumaturge is a slow, text heavy caper that is often curious and sometimes captivating, weaving revolutionary labor politics and mysticism together to create a unique and charming piece of historical science fiction.

Thumb Culture: 5 / 5

The Thaumaturge has been on my radar for a while. With everything outlined above and much more that wasn’t spoken about due to story spoiler reasons, it definitely reached the high expectations I had. Dare I even say it surpassed them! Yes, the game has it’s flaws however they do not take away from the main experience. Which at it’s core, is absolutely amazing. I will happily be awarding The Thaumaturge the Thumb Culture Platinum Award.
