1. StarCraft

  1. Developer: Blizzard Entertainment
  2. Year: 1998
  3. Estimated number of copies sold: 11 million (including Brood War expansion)

Fans of fantasy universes need to eat that one – science-fiction sells much better when it comes to strategy games. Because if the Warcraftseries has achieved moderate success, StarCraft has exceeded every expectation. An RTS with three long story campaigns, starring Terrans, Zergs, and Protoss, turned out to be a real gem to which other titles were compared. The game itself brilliantly combined strategic gameplay with an exciting story and action, which made it attractive to a much wider audience.

The sales results exceeded all expectations. StarCraft was included in the Guinness Book of Records with over 11 million copies sold as the best-selling strategy game – this also includes the Brood War expansion. The 11 million figure comes from 2009, a time when physical copies still mattered and before the release of the remastered version (2017), when the title moved to a free-to-play model.
