The Calypso Twins – Borderlands 3

Who are the Calypso twins?

Troy and Tyreen Calypso are the main antagonists in Borderlands 3. They belong to the Sirens, which means they possess certain magical powers and lead the cult of Children of the Vault, for which they deserve credit – they managed to unite many groups of bandits plundering the wastes of this world under one flag. They love to be loud and in the center of attention, and are obsessed with streaming and hating others. The Calypso Twins were created with the intention of matching the charisma of Handsome Jack, the antagonist from the previous game, but did the authors really succeed? Troy and Tyreen are indeed unusual characters, but the thought of them mostly irritates players.

Why do gamers hate the Calypso twins?

Troy and Tyreen Calypso are primarily annoying cause of their demeanor. They are loud, shout at each other, interrupt each other, and generally say nothing of great wisdom. They don't seem very scary as antagonists, and their lines were intentionally very badly written. We want to get rid of them out of impatience, not to save the world.

Interestingly, the glorification of streaming twins from Borderlands 3 and the whole concept of the storyline means that Calypso Twins are often considered an allegory for the modern toxicity of the internet and the phenomenon of popular streamers and YouTubers. Their Children of the Vault cult, in turn, is a base of followers or subscribers blindly liking every activity, even the most meager. If the developers were really trying to convey something deeper here, I think they've succeeded, and it's worth noting that somewhere in between the Calypso Twins' rants.
