Worlds of Ultima: The Savage Empire

GENERAL INFORMATION

  1. Genre: RPG
  2. Release date: 30 December 1990
  3. Developer: Origin Systems
  4. Available at: GOG

If you want to try for free Ultima games current journalists often refer to up to this day, Worlds of Ultima: The Savage Empire is a perfect opportunity for just that. It’s a spin-off production in which players assume the role of a character taken to another dimension resembling prehistoric Earth.

The game rejects fantasy in favor of an homage towards classic adventure movies and picaresque novels such as The Lost World and Indiana Jones. It is not something you often see in RPGs even today, as you’re generally more likely to wind up in space with some biotic implants, get to a nuclear wasteland, or ride a dragon. Apart from this aspect, all remaining Ultima signature elements are here - a quite complex plot, sympatic companions, and highly interactive world.

HOW WELL DID IT AGE?

The game gets difficult to operate - after all, it has an interface from 1990. Still, despite archaic visuals and gameplay, The Savage Empire retained a lot of its charm. If you’re not afraid of a very old school, this is a game definitely worth trying.
