Around the World in 80 Minutes – Iconic Cities and Landmarks in Flight Simulator 2020

A trip around the world without a mask? In Flight Simulator 2020, it's not a problem. Here's how the famous and locations look like in the new Microsoft game, and how they compare with other video games.

Table of Contents

Paris

Like London, Paris is procedurally generated – with slightly more special points. It features the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, and several other locations, although the Notre Dame cathedral is missing. If you want to see Paris up-close, you can find a nicer view in Assassin's Creed: Unity. In Flight Simulator 2020, the French capital looks rather poorly even compared to smaller cities.

Normandy – Pointe du Hoc

We're staying in France for a little while longer to check out not a city, but a location known from Call of Duty 2. It's Pointe du Hoc in Normandy – a promontory between beacheads codename Utah and Omaha. During the D-Day landing, the American Rangers were to assault an unusually tall cliff. It is the only place on the beaches of Normandy preserved intact after the war. Indeed, the texture of the satellite image shows a network of trenches and sinkholes left after the bombings, but the already distinctive cliff promontory has been completely flattened. The AI apparently didn't figure out it was a rock. Maybe one day someone will mod it into the game.

Athens

On the left: the Acropolis from Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey. To the right, the same place in Microsoft Flight Simulator.

Athens is distinguished from the first two cities by a slightly more mountainous landscape. Of course, it couldn't happen without Greece's landmark, the Acropolis – in the form of the famous ruins. This building was recently featured in Assassin's Creed: Odyssey in its full glory.

Egypt

Just outside a vast area of Egypt's capital, Cairo, you will find the Giza Pyramids along with the Sphinx. The amount of detail isn't as big as in Assassin's Creed: Origins, but they still look good even after landing right at their feet. If we go further south, we'll find a few more detailed pyramids.
