Battlefield I is an example of a classic computer game in which we mindlessly shoot hundreds of hostile characters, and everything takes place in the setting of the First World War. Valiant Hearts: The Great War also uses the backdrop of the great conflict of the early 20th century, but does so in a much more sophisticated way. Based on authentic letters from that period, it tells different stories of different people affected by the war: a French farmer forcibly enlisted in the army, a paramedic from Belgium looking for her father, an American volunteer and a German footsoldier.
Despite the cheerful, comic-strip graphics and the lack of any gore or violence, the creators still managed to show all the horrors of war and the human suffering. Just focusing on the plot and stories of individual characters was enough for their poignant fates to deliver a real tour-de-force. It's hard to believe that it's the same creators who made the cheerful Rayman. In this case, they managed to totally surprise us.
