The Best Obscure RPGs - 2022 Update

There's plenty of good RPG releases every week. Unfortunately, many of them do not get the popularity they deserve. Today, we are looking into games that some fans of the genre might have missed, and definitely should play.

Valkyria Chronicles 4 – war in the Japanese version

VALKYRIA CHRONICLES 4 IN A NUTSHELL:

  1. Producer: SEGA
  2. Platforms: PC, XONE, PS4, Switch
  3. Release date: September 25, 2018
  4. 5,203 reviews on Steam

The PC Valkyria Chronicles met with great interest, finding over 900,000 buyers on Steam (as of 2019). It is therefore not very surprising that the fourth installment of the series debuted on the PC on the same day as on consoles. However, it hasn't repeated the success of the first part – now, almost a year after the release, it is estimated that around 150 thousand people bough the game on Steam (that's as of 2019).

But don't be fooled by the weaker sales results – Valkyria Chronicles 4 is a magnificent game, in all respects, comparable to the first VC. We return to the world known from previous installments in the series, representing a fantastic conflict inspired by World War 2. Although the plot focuses on battles, the plot is extended and full of colorful characters, which the player can quickly grow fond of.

The mechanics are a combination of a tactical RPG with a shooter. The player commands the squad as in strategies, but each character is controlled as in arcade games, so it has a limited number of action points. It is no different from the original mechanics, but since this system hasn't become popular among a wider range of games, Valkyria Chronicles 4 is still fresh.

The game is an excellent follow-up. After the disappointing second and third parts, the series finally comes back in style. The sales of the PC version weren't really impressive, but this game is still finding new customers, and we hope this won't change in the future.

Valkyria Chronicles 4 is the game for you if:

  1. you're tired of crazy fantasy worlds;
  2. you're looking for an RPG with a well-designed, tactical combat system;
  3. you want a rich and long history of war;
  4. you're not afraid of the Japanese style.
