The Best Obscure RPGs - 2022 Update

There's plenty of good RPG releases every week. Unfortunately, many of them do not get the popularity they deserve. Today, we are looking into games that some fans of the genre might have missed, and definitely should play.

Table of Contents

Broken Lines – World War II in the form of a tactical RPG

BROKEN LINES AT A GLANCE

  1. Developer: PortaPlay
  2. Platforms: PC, Switch
  3. Release date: February 25, 2020
  4. 580 reviews on Steam

Good tactical RPGs aren't released very often, let alone those set in World War II. However, it's not only the uniqueness that makes this game worth recommending.

The action takes place on the Eastern Front. Now, the authors opted for an alternative story, which provided them with more creative freedom, but that doesn't mean there's going to be any nonsense in terms of story. The player controls a squad of eight soldiers whose plane crashed far behind enemy lines. The story is largely non-linear and shaped by our decisions.

The gameplay focuses on tactical skirmishes. Taking proper advantage of the terrain and equipment, creating ambushes and efficient cooperation of all members of the squad are key.

An interesting element is the morale system. Our decisions, both in terms of the plot and during the skirmishes, affect the attitude of our subordinates. If they are dissatisfied with the player's leadership, they will do worse on the battlefield and may even defect.

All in all, Broken Lines is a good tactical RPG. It has an interesting storyline, a non-linear campaign, refined battles and a lot of fresh ideas.

Broken Lines is the game for you if:

  1. you're looking for an RPG in historical realities;
  2. you're interested in tactical gameplay;
  3. you feel like taking a different approach to the genre.
